To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}}
on your user page. By the way, seeing as you haven't created a user page yet, simply click here to start it.
Please remember to:
- Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the
button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes
~~~~
at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to your talk page, and a timestamp. - Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
[edit] Hello, I'm Jauerback. I wanted to let you know that one or more external links you added have been removed because they seemed to be inappropriate for an encyclopedia. Take a look at our guidelines about external links. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. - Please stop adding links to blogs and other music websites and disguising them as sources. It's disruptive and continuing to do so will get you blocked. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 20:29, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Jauerback,
- My apologies. I think I've misunderstood the threshold for citations.
- That said, there are factual inaccuracies and outdated figures in the updates I made that I stand behind. Would it be better to make these text changes only, without any additional citations?
- Examples:
- - (Mechanical license) Royalty rates are outdated and based on a single Verge article. They need to be updated to 12.7 / 2.45 and the citation I added linked to a help article with multiple sources of its own. Arguably a more credible source than one news article.
- - (Cover version) "Mechanical License" is slightly misused and implies that all US Mechanical licenses are compulsory, when only a subsection of these licenses issued follow compulsory mechanical licensing law. The additional citations I added were intended to give further context for readers as to the basis, and each link had further sources (though this one I recognize was to a blog post).
- - (Compulsory license) This article was lacking current royalty rates for reader reference, though I'll admit the citation I added could just as easily have been to the Mechanical License article.
- Would it be better to only added these corrections as text without external links? Or am I missing some key details of how to go about these corrections?
- Thank you,
- Aglegacy Aglegacy (talk) 20:42, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- First of all, read up what constitutes a reliable source. An outdated reliable source is better than a current, unreliable one that is to a blog or to a spammy site. Also, you can't use another Wikipedia article as a source. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 20:49, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Understood. In that case, should I not be making corrections to factual inaccuracies if I can't find a reliable source?
- Also could you please clarify for me the difference between this source: https://web.archive.org/web/20100718154906/http://www.harryfox.com/public/DoIneedaMechanicalLicense.jsp
- And this source: https://support.easysong.com/hc/en-us/articles/5440138949011-How-Cover-Song-Royalties-Are-Calculated
- These are both prominent licensing agencies who are authorities on mechanical licensing. What should I be looking out for to know which is the reliable source? Aglegacy (talk) 20:54, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Neither would be considered a reliable source.
- You can change/correct things without a source, but don't be surprised if it gets removed. Adding a {{cn}} tag at the end would also help. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 21:02, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
- Got it. Thank you that is helpful Aglegacy (talk) 22:36, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
