Creation of Fictional Coats of Arms

[edit]

Hi. I'm new to this, and I am a little bit confused. This may seem confusing, but I was hoping to create a fictional Coat of Arms for a Fictional Welsh Police Force. However, I have some concern when it comes to creating one based on the facts of copyright laws and permission from other users. How would I be able to create one without the concerns of copyright and permission from other users? Hope I will have an answer soon. BA38P (talk) 04:51, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That may sound weird, but: use your brain, perhaps? By this, I mean: create something yourself that is not a copy of something extant. You can take inspiration from other works, especially as heraldry often contains old and unprotected (in copyright terms) elements. This is quite the same thing as a comic / manga artist inventing story elements (let's use Shen Long from Dragon Ball as example: it's based upon the East Asian cultural concept of a Ryu, but its concise appearance was created by Akira Toriyama. Or let's take the supersonic trijet from Vol 714 pour Sidney, the penultimate Tintin story: it was created by Roger Leloup but based upon reallife physics). So, go ahead, sharpen your pencils and draw (or ask your friendly image generating AI)! (Caveat: any result is expected to not be in scope for an upload here on Commons.) Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 05:30, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I will get started. I'll see what is possible. Thanks for your help. BA38P (talk) 05:33, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@BA38P: repeating that last caveat: any result is expected to not be in scope for an upload here on Commons (emphasis mine). - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@BA38P: to be clear, see Commons Scope. Files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons should have educational illustrative value. If it is some famous fiction, for example a work that has articles in Wikipedias, a useful illustration of that work of fiction can be in scope. If it is just your own personal fiction you are making up for fun, it does not belong here on Commons (there are many other places on the internet for such things, not here.) Hope this makes things clear. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 13:15, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok. I might not have to upload it here anyway. I'll figure out one that is safe for here. Other than that, I'll hold off on it until I get it figured out. BA38P (talk) 10:50, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Tatrasica

[edit]

Hvala Dragana.Radosevic (talk) 09:29, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Google says that is: "I want to organize Pojan Tatrasica, a village in Serbia, on Stara Planina, where my ancestors come from. There is a book published by a man from that area, but it is not available on the Internet. Could I use the information from that book? Thanks"
That seems to be a question about Wikipedia, not Wikimedia Commons, and the answer will depend on the rules of the specific Wikipedia concerned. Try asking on sr:Википедија:Trg/Razno. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:53, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading the logo of a sports team

[edit]

The last logo I uploaded unfortunately got deleted, cause I set wrong settings or permissions. I am part of the organisation of that sports team, we own our logo and want to add it to the wikipedia article. Which settings / kind of permission do I need to choose?

You have two options; you can upload the image here, with an email as described above, if you are wiling and authorised to allow others to use it, even commercially.
Or you can upload it directly on (the English) Wikipedia, under their fair use rules. Note that some Wikipedias, including German, don't have that option. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:49, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How can I remove the block from my account?

[edit]

A few years ago, I changed the incorrectly translated name of the city of CHEMNITZ into Georgian and indicated the source as the Georgian-German dictionary published in 2007. Unfortunately, my corrections were rejected by the administrator Davit1010, citing a source that itself was based on a source published in the 1950s in the no longer existing USSR, and that only a dictionary is not enough for correction. By the way, the source he indicated has already been corrected exactly as I suggested. Yesterday I discovered a new source - "Transcription of the German sound system into Georgian - Transliteration Guidelines" (adopted at the meeting of the State Language Expert Commission on June 10, 2022). I wrote about this in the "Discussion" section and corrected the title again. Because of this, I, my email and IP were permanently blocked by the administrator Mehman. The reason given was destructive behavior. Unfortunately, I did not know that editing is not allowed without the administrator's consent. I can't even contact the administrator because of the block they have imposed on me. Please help me remove the block, I already know that editing requires the administrator's consent. Zurab53 (talk) 12:32, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Zurab53 Accorded to my researches. Your message on "Commons" is your only contribution there.

Therefore , the block didn't happenned on "Commons". I can saw on the links below that you did contributed to "Wikidata" , "Wikipedia in Georgian" and "Wikipedia in Russian" :

https://xtools.wmcloud.org/globalcontribs/Zurab53
https://guc.toolforge.org/?by=date&user=Zurab53

So , I read the content of your global account there to understand where are you blocked.
There are a local block on "Wikipedia in Georgian".

As each project is independant of each others. "Commons" isn't the right place to make an appeal.
I don't know if it's possible in your situation because I don't know the case and I don't know internal procedures on "Wikipedia in Georgian".

You can't make an appeal on "Commons" concerning this matter in the same way that you can't make an appeal on "Wikipedia in Russian" or "Wikidata". This is an internal matter to "Wikipedia in Georgian".

We can't support a side because this is an internal matter to "Wikipedia in Georgian". We are not in the capacity to help. Anatole-berthe (talk) 13:09, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

uploaded wikipedia photo files

[edit]

So I uploaded two photo files but did something wrong so they didn't get placed on the wikipedia page for marek szczesny b. 1939. Now I am trying to upload them again but it says that they are duplicates so won't let me add them. Margery Clay (talk) 16:39, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Margery Clay: please inform us about your chosen filename and/or if the photo you're asking about is in this list: Special:ListFiles/Margery Clay. The list shows all files you uploaded to Commons. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 17:06, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Margery Clay: Please do not upload duplicate copies of files that are already on Commons. If you want to display files in a Wikipedia article, you must insert their file names there. Also, something doesn't seem clear. Maybe you can clarify. Given that you upload photos and reproductions of works by Marek Szczęsny as your own works with a free license saying that you own the copyrights, are you saying that you are Marek Szczęsny posting here under the user name Margery Clay and that the portrait is a self-portrait? -- Asclepias (talk) 18:52, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In particular, you might want to read Commons:Uploading works by a third party#Determining from whom we need a license. - Jmabel ! talk 18:57, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Margery Clay: You might also want to read en:H:PIC for the syntax used to display your photos in articles (and elsewhere).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:26, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

change image file type

[edit]

I created (my first) commons file: File:Homoecy_Monoecy_Dioecy_en.png . I've now redone this as an SVG. How can I replace the original file with the SVG version? Thanks. Pcrooker (talk) 02:16, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Pcrooker, you can’t actually change the file type of an image. You can just upload the new image with the same name but with a .svg extension instead (i.e. File:Homoecy Monoecy Dioecy en.svg). Then, you can tagged your PNG image with {{Vector version available}}. Tvpuppy (talk) 02:26, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Replacing on Commons? No need and no use, you should simply upload your SVG under a related filename, if you wish to do so. Replacing in other projects? Simply chose which file you want to use and do not care about the extension, it doesn't matter for Wikipedia editions et al. The software takes care of the appropriate displaying. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 02:31, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FOP-US vs US-gov

[edit]

Which scripture to follow? If you have an opinion, please join the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Amelia Earhart Statue by Mark and George Lundeen.jpg. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:37, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Its not a matter of conflicting "scriptures". Simply, if one person takes a photo of an artwork by someone else, there are two issues to consider regarding copyright. 1)The photographer's copyright. (In this case fine, PD US Gov work.) 2)The copyright of the artwork seen in the photo. (That's what discussion is about in the deletion request.) In most countries, modern artworks are under copyright. Taking a photo of someone else's artwork is an example of derivative work ("DW"). "Freedom of panorama" ("FOP") is not a license; it's shorthand to explain that some countries have various laws stating that some things that might otherwise be copyrighted are free to photograph in public places; such laws vary from country to country. Take a look at the DW and FOP links. I hope this clarifies what issues are being discussed. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 13:33, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that reasoning. My hypothesis is still that when AOC says "this pic of a 2022 statue in our Hall is PD", it's because they have made the necessary agreement with the artist that it's ok for the AOC to publish some pictures in that manner. I take the fact that they do so in several cases on their website as evidence of this (a lot of the statues are PD-old, so this problem doesn't apply to those).
The artist had no problem with this (still my hypothesis), since having a particular AOC-pic in PD doesn't mean the artwork is in PD, and having one's statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection is extremely cool. So my argument boils down to "trust the US federal agency on this." I wouldn't necessarily make that argument in another context. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:08, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

De minimis & Threshold of originality question

[edit]

Hello! I'm currently writing a page on Wikipedia for National FFA degrees, and was wondering if this photo of a State Degree (as seen on the top image of this link [1]) can be uploaded under fair use? As a diploma, its mostly text, which I don't think meets the threshold of originality needed for copyright. Additionally, the FFA logo used on the degree (which I believe is copyrighted) is very small, and I was wondering if this would count as de minimis as it's not what's being focused on in the photo. I really appreciate any responses, cheers! Johnson524 (talk) 17:25, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That Flickr account is listed at Commons:Questionable Flickr images (and consequently User:FlickreviewR/bad-authors) with the rationale “Many recent uploads are screenshots from non-free sources with doubtful CC-BY licenses. Some older images are likely legitimate though; careful evaluation required.” --Rosenzweig τ 18:54, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Stepping around potential FOP/copyright infringements - FOP Australia

[edit]

Hi, I have taken some images on a few occasions around a small village/town in Australia (Burringbar) for visual record purposes, see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Burringbar,_New_South_Wales - not all these images are mine, but most are. However I wonder about possible copyright infringement in some - e.g. File:Burringbar,_NSW_war_memorial(s)_April_2025_-_3.jpg includes logos of various armed services, File:Burringbar,_NSW_Rail_Trail_stop_April_2025.jpg contains some signage about the rail trail including (maybe) a distant logo, etc. I am unsure to what extent https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#Australia permits use of these or not - any advice appreciated...

@Daimlerfahrer 1500: It is not really all that long for this sort of thing, but if you want to inquire about the status of the ticket, you would ask at Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard. - Jmabel ! talk 19:55, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Jmabel,
thank you for the answer. Then I will wait a few days longer before I text Volunteer Response Team.

Trust the Metadata or nominate for copyvio?

[edit]

File:Aron D'Souzas.jpg

File:DSouza casual 2.jpg

These uploads by @Enhanced 1 appear previously online, examples include [3][4]. However, they have decent metadata. And the username hints at Enhanced Games.

What's the reasonable approach? "The metadata probably means that "own work" is correct, let it be." or "Nom as copyvio, probably the usual "found it online and uploaded it", if I'm wrong it's up to the uploader to sort out the COM:VRT stuff." ? @Jeff G. So, always go for copyvio deletion in this situation? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:46, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Unless they have already alluded to authorization.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:09, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång, concerning EXIF / metadata: these datasets, the EXIF, aren't something that can be unconditionally trusted. Someone with a bit of computer knowledge can manipulate everything there, see the tools listed in Commons:Exif. BUT: you can use EXIF as hints and evidence for demonstrating a legitimacy in uploads! Internal (in one specific file) and external (over a file set) consistency is always a valuable sign (it's quite difficult to emulate a faked EXIF set with data for camera model, shot time, exposure, ISO, aperture, focal length, serial numbers, software...) from a camera save for copying it from another genuine file, but that would introduce other inconsistencies (weird focal lengths or ISO values for instance). How to upload an image with the creator's permission?

i want to upload images of person Muhammad Alimmuddin of Manipur(indian state), who died on 1983.
In wikicommons we must provide lisence (pd) of Home country & America.
  • ✓ Home Country lisence:- {PD-INDIA}
  • ❓ America:-{PD-1996}, not sure because It may be satisfy first point of this template, because date of origin, is unknown the known thing is image captured before 1983.@Jmabel
獅眠洞 (talk) 22:27, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@獅眠洞: I'm guessing you mean Mohammed Alimuddin, since the date fits. It is unlikely that there is an image of Muhammad Alimuddin is an adult that would be in the public domain both in the U.S and India. He was born in 1920. Anything published in India after 1935 would have still been in copyright in the U.S. in 1996, so it would still be in copyright now. (Even pictures that are PD just in India might be hard to come by. The picture would have to be no later than 1965, and if the photographer is known they would have to have died no later than 1965.) - Jmabel ! talk 23:28, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel,Is there any way to upload his image?. I see some copyright images on Wikipedia. 獅眠洞 (talk) 09:48, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@獅眠洞: the only legitimate way to place a copyrighted file on Commons is to find out who owns the copyright and get them to offer a free license.
Outside of Commons, it would of course depend where you wanted to upload it and for what purpose. For example, en:Wikipedia:Non-free content allows that for a deceased person who is the subject of a Wikipedia article and for whom no free image is available, en-wiki will host one low-resolution image of that person for use of the article. That does not involve Commons at all, and if you have further questions about it, ask them on en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Higher quality picture

[edit]

I recently uploaded File:1972P53 The English Ship Hampton Court in a Gale.jpg, which is based on a download of the museum's own online photograph. Another version of the same painting, but photographed in the museum and (to my eye) suffering from problems with reflections, etc, is already here at File:An English Man-o-War in a Gale - Willem van de Velde the younger - Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery March 2012 (cropped+retouched).jpg. Is there an easy way of linking the two together and have the user find the higher quality image first? ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 20:01, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. @ThoughtIdRetired: you can look at the file pages and see how I did it. No guarantee what they find first, but they can now easily navigate from one to the other and make their own choice. - Jmabel ! talk 21:16, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr location searching

[edit]

Apologies that this isn't 100% related to Commons, but it's a question related to finding images for Commons, and I have no idea where else to ask since I don't really use Flickr very much.

I'm trying to find images for a WP article using Flickr, but I'm very aware that a lot of Flickr photos have generic names and no descriptions, so instead I'd like to search for images taken in a specific location. There's Map, but it doesn't zoom in far enough for my purposes and doesn't give a straight-up list of images or a date range option (the latter is important for what I'm looking for). Is there any way to get Flickr images from a specific location, preferably within a date range? Suntooooth (talk) 02:09, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

While Flickr has tools to find photos within date range (at least for logged in users), it does not have specific search by location. Only a portion of Flickr images have Flickr Map information; for photos without embedded geolocation it is often added by the users, frequently being very approximate and often off by miles. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:51, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Strange that they've gone to the trouble of setting up the Map page but not a proper "search by location" function. Suntooooth (talk) 17:38, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Help - Posting an article

[edit]

Hi There,

I've got an article I'd like to post regarding a company that has helped build housing for blue collar workers and established a lot of work in building a better future for blue collar workers. I'd like help on how to know if this article is alright for posting or not. The article talks about the company's history, how many buildings they have and also what industries they have contributed to and in what ways.

What do I need to look for in order to avoid rejection?

Thanks! ThailandGuru2025 (talk) 08:16, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Uploads are being blocked somehow

[edit]

I have uploaded many files to Wiki Commons using the standard uploader, but since getting my new Windows computer with Defender my uploads are somehow blocked with the message "No internet connection". Of course I have high speed cable connection and am constantly on the web. Is the problem that the file has EXIF metadata? Is the problem on my device or are there undocumented restrictions on the site? Quinet (talk) 17:25, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The actual message is "Could not connect to the server. Make sure you have a working internet connection and try again." Quinet (talk) 17:28, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
depends on your internet provider, the software you have, or your browser being out of date,
EXIF data shouldnt cause this, but if you took the image with a phone it might contain location data of yours, so make sure to double check.
you mentioned Windows defender like it had to do with something, but you only mentioned it once, maybe check your firewall? 140.82.178.97 17:50, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The photo was taken with a Nikon, all my software is fully up-to-date, I have tried with several browsers, same issue. I have no idea whether Defender is implicated, but I suspect something on my device is doing the blocking. I'm hoping someone has a theory... Quinet (talk) 18:08, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I want to upload a screen shot of an image of an article about Wikipedia. Is that allowed? MotherBoard1994 (talk) 19:52, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@MotherBoard1994: probably not. To be uploaded to Commons it would have to be either in the public domain or free-licensed. Few such articles would qualify for either. Also, typically articles don't get uploaded to Commons even if they qualify on these grounds. Why do you want to upload it? Trying to update coordinate in structured data, but button does nothing
