I have completed and downloaded images for our historic building. Will these images need approved before they can be viewed for our property before they are posted? And is there a contact telephone number to call for assistance? Thank you Michelle Lewis Guckercoalco (talk) 21:36, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Guckercoalco: you can see your images in Special:ListFiles/Guckercoalco. However you have claimed these images as your own work but these are mostly COM:Derivative works, photographs-of-photographs. One of your pictures is a photo of computer monitor showing a Flickr picture. We would need to know the original author(s) to keep these. MKFI (talk) 08:16, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am the original author of this photo;
I took the photo and the image in the picture are signs I had made for our family property. is this the information needed? thank you Guckercoalco (talk) 18:15, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Guckercoalco: Surely you are not the original author of all of your uploads, e.g. File:Photo taken at Coal office, Frank with grandson Fred and David Gucker later 1940’s.jpg. Or are you actually saying you are in you 90s and took it as a child? If so, say so, but I've been on Commons a long time, and at 70 I'm one of the older active contributors here. My own earliest "own work" here is from 1966, and over the last two decades I've encountered a couple of other users with legitimate "own work" as old as the early 1950s (though some of those users are now no longer alive), but I cannot recall encountering any with work from the 1940s.
As for File:2003- reproduction of the original signs for the Gucker coal Company.jpg: it's probably OK (though the screen stuff should probably be cropped out). The sign on the left is too simple to copyright, and for the one on the right the original is presumably from before 1978 and published without notice, so it would have lost copyright. But all of that needs to be stated on the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
hi, Jmabel, thanks for replying!!! not 90 years young but getting there!!!!!
40's photo are my personnel family photo. are you says I have to be the original photographer to post online? the original photographer would have been my grandmother.
in reference to the signs. I designed, made and took the picture of the
signs. Do I need to state that in the post? Do you think it still is an issue. your expertise would greatly appreciated. thank you Guckercoalco (talk) 19:56, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Guckercoalco:
  • You don't have to reanimate your grandmother, but you do need to credit her as the photographer, and give the source as something like "family album". This is not "own work". Also, you should get the date as accurate as you can, even if that is just something like {{other date|between|1942|1949}} or {{other date|decade|1940}}, which show respectively as "between 1942 and 1949
    date QS:P,+1942-00-00T00:00:00Z/8,P1319,+1942-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1326,+1949-00-00T00:00:00Z/9
    " and "1940s
    date QS:P,+1940-00-00T00:00:00Z/8
" (and which are internationalized for viewers in other languages). Also, similarly, the license should not be {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}. It should be something like {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs|attribution=HOWEVER YOU WANT THIS ATTRIBUTED}}.
  • Yes, it is important to say that (probably in the "permission" section of {{Information}}) that the sign is your own design, if that is the case. If it were someone else's design it would be a copyright issue, and unless you state it explicitly it is not obvious it is your own.
- Jmabel ! talk 04:50, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And, since most work from the 1940s is still copyrighted, probably will need licenses from the heirs who hold the copyrights. - Jmabel ! talk 19:57, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am the heir. does this address your comment or do I need to make further applications? thanks for you assistance. Guckercoalco (talk) 16:23, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Another serious problem with that photo-of-Flickr is that the photographer marked it as "all rights reserved". DS (talk) 23:57, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@DragonflySixtyseven: That is a serious problem. The file on Flickr has been so marked since upload July 29, 2010 at 12:27:33 AM EDT.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:22, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think what happened is, Guckercoalco owns the rights to the Gucker logo (as the heir), and therefore assumed that they own the rights to all photos of signs with the Gucker logo on them. Which is an understandable error, but an error nonetheless. DS (talk) 14:29, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
hello, might we discuss your reply as I am new at this and need further assistance. thank you Guckercoalco (talk) 18:05, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Guckercoalco: by the way, I see that you have a business name on your account. Please see Commons:Username policy. You will need to verify this account (as explained on that page) or it will almost certainly be blocked. - Jmabel ! talk 20:03, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I verified the account via an email I received. Is there something else needed completed? thank you Guckercoalco (talk) 16:24, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Guckercoalco: That doesn't sound right. Verifying an account is normally something you would initiate, not something where you are responding. Did you read the description of account verification at Commons:Username policy? Is this something you already did? I don't see any evidence of it having been, though I guess it could still be in process. Jmabel ! talk 03:55, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did initiate and the email received was in reference to verification of account. thank you Guckercoalco (talk) 21:09, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
does my reply address your concern for my account? any help is appreciated. thank you Guckercoalco (talk) 18:09, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

COM:ADVERT

[edit]

How to mass rename/move (files)/delete (redirects, where files are already've been renamed) for IP ~400 objects at least changing obvious email (that is COM:ADVERT) "[email protected]" to "Klub Lewicy" (according to flickr account name it uploaded from) as it's too hard to template it one by one, you know.

Also - how is possible something like deleting a revision comment meant here and here? 203.57.51.188 16:39, 21 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

First part is solved (still one by one), but still no answer for the second one. 201.150.118.26 15:23, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Are you talking about deleting revs like [1]? Yes, technically an admin can hide those. I personally am not convinced that hiding them would be a good thing. - Jmabel ! talk 20:00, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel No, there is no need to hide comments on intermediate revisions, what is meant there is to hide it only on the original (first) or any other later revision where the file was uploaded and which, for this reason, is permanently displayed in the table of the "file history" section of the file main page, which is what causes the dissonance due to the requirements of COM:ADVERT, because still being massively (if there's many similar ones exists from same uploader) displaying the advertising both on such file pages and in external search engines' result that display its readable content.
Of course, only if there is a violation in such a comment on the file load.
As for the hiding of earlier images in the history - in this revision example an image was uploaded containing, as only useful, advertising posters with full contact information of two companies belonging to one individual, which is difficult to perceive as anything other than COM:ADVERT, but that was recommended to just blur, which, however, was not done ever, but no way to delete, since the image is ostensibly an example of local architecture. And, based on the expressed doubts about the admissibility of the file (in fact, the nomination for deletion is), if and when the recommendation to blur advertising posters is at least followed by someone, who will create such a new image and upload it as new revision of current file, it is logical, in order not to violate COM:ADVERT, to hide from the history the original image containing full contact information, leaving only the blurred one. Although, considering that over 6 years no one has blurred this data, the file is quite subject to a new nomination for deletion for the same reason, since the violation still remains.
The question here is - how exactly to do both (request to hide the comment on the file upload) and the other (request to hide an earlier upload from the file history)? What templates can be used for this or where to create such a request? 4.242.91.54 19:30, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. If someone else thinks this matters, they can take over responding. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 11 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Probably, but the problem does exist, at least off the top of my head, in ~1700 files ([2], [3], [4]...).
not to mention file pages containing emails in other places (17830+14930+383562+?) - however bots can help here exactly.
So are there tools for hiding revision comments (any service pages/templates)? Or do I just have to ask the administrators manually in each individual case? 4.242.91.54 23:11, 20 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello IP. Then just start with your renaming suggestions again. They won't get a new name on their own. Greetings זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 00:11, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Ziv! ;)
I already used to (and I will later) suggest renames (there's about 200 more to rename at all with that exact reason) via existing template, but that's not the case here, as renaming i.e. done by you does not affect initial upload revision comment so there's one more step is needed to affect it I search how to the best. What I mean is something about 'deleting' (hiding from public) edit comment meant here, however there's no specific template exists "In order to avoid the Streisand effect". Specific ones exists for quite 'rude' actions - like various reasons to delete uploaded image - only, but no any for 'much softer' actions like just 'decommenting' it. And someone really use suggestions meant there (may be used in all cases where regular deletions are permitted) that usually means long term deletion request, that look ridiculous when there's ~1700 cases of just deleting the revision comment and not uploaded with that revision image itself. So then question is - what is the simplest way to request such partial revdel (for comment only) when there's no even specific template exists avoiding deletion request each time it needed. 4.242.91.54 01:44, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Everyone here agrees with the filename changes, including the deletion of redirects if they can't be suppressed. However, I honestly can't answer whether it's really necessary to delete the version history for this reason. Very few users even look at it or are even interested in it. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 02:22, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I received photo from owner/initial photographer with copyright, she gave me permission to use it in Wiki commons and after I upload it she will send her permission to VRT (she didn't have Wiki account and she don't want to make it bcs it is too comolicated but she didn't mind to share this photo with public).

  • Did she need also send original with metadata?
  • Also is it okay to upload photo with her copyright or I need to crop it out?
  • Do I need to ask her where she first uploaded this photo and put link in description?
  • Do I need fix something on photo description? Илона И (talk) 00:06, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Convenience link (please use internal links, which work correctly both on PCs and on mobile devices): File:Kim Seon Ho at Weverse live in 2024.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 02:47, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You are asking several separate questions here. I've taken the liberty of reformatting so they do not run into one another. - Jmabel ! talk 02:49, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I take it that the original photographer is "TUKKATA MICKIE" and that is how she wants to be attributed. I've edited accordingly, but please fix if that is wrong.
  • You had the "permission pending" tag on there twice. I've fixed that and put that in a more appropriate place.
  • Given that EXIF metadata appears to have been stripped from the version you uploaded, and other photos from this session are on line, yes, she should definitely provide that to VRT to show she was the photographer.
  • Not sure what you mean about cropping out a copyright. A copyright is an abstraction. Are you talking about some sort of watermark? I don't see any on the uploaded photo.
  • If this precise photo is already online, the earliest upload should ideally be listed as the source. Otherwise, the source is simply that she provided you the file.
  • Description seems fine. A category related to where the photo was taken would be good.
  • More important than any of this: you have not indicated what license is forthcoming, just that the permission is pending. {{Permission pending}} is not a substitute for a license tag, it is a supplement to a license tag.

Hello @Jmabel thank you for info
•There was watermark at photo but I thought it can't be shown so I cropped it out, I asked just in case if it is okay to upload photos with watermark of photographer name at Wiki Commons with photographer permission.
•It first was upload at her Instagram, so I put link to this post now just in case.
•I send her generated letter text that she need to send to VRT team her license stated as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International. I added license like this at License's photo category or I did it wrongly? Илона И (talk) 03:33, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Илона И: Much progress here, but the photo you linked on Instagram seems to be a different photo, possibly from that session. Also: just as well to crop out the watermark. Watermarks are allowed, but not encouraged; see Template:Watermark.
Other than that, we seem to be on track. - Jmabel ! talk 03:38, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel thank you for tip, I will put the right link to right photo in her karousel of photos.
I also asked her to send with permission letter initial photo. Илона И (talk) 04:07, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Илона И: I'm sure that if she sends the email, we will get this sorted out. Sorry it was so late in the process that anyone aimed you at Commons:Uploading works by a third party, the document that would have guided you through most of this. FWIW, in the time since that's been written, we have occasion here on help desk to aim several users at that every day. Not sure what we could do to make it more prominently visible.
You certainly should not have been reported to an Administrators' noticeboard, and I hope you noticed that once it was in the hands of the admins there, everyone tried to help you rather than presume you were doing anything wrong for any reason other than confusion. I'm sorry if this put you off of Commons. You were clearly trying to do things right, and you are welcome here. - Jmabel ! talk 04:16, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel thank you again for kindness.
Actually right now I don't know what to do. So situation like this. I am in fan group of Kim Seon Ho and when I mentioned that I worked a little bit with Wikipedia they asked me to change his profile photo (current one really not it). So after this was all this bruhahaha with copyright infrigment from my ignorant side but after this one of the fans said that they knew fan with good pictures, I asked them twice if she took it by herself and pressed that it need to be her own photo, taken by herself, they answered Yes. So I contacted her and she gave me her permission. I upload it and instructed her how to answer to VRT and give permission for Use. But after your side asker her for original she said to me that it was capture from Welive so she didn't have original ㅠㅠ.
IDK if it was misscommunication or lost in translation but I asked her before if she took it by herself and in person ㅠㅠ. So now I again need to put this pic for deletion? I am so sorry for all this commotion... Илона И (talk) 04:40, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Илона И: I'm afraid so. As I wrote in that piece I linked, "Unfortunately, adding third-party work to Commons is one of the trickiest things a user can do here: it raises every issue that might come up in uploading your own work, plus a slew of additional issues." But now that you pretty much understand the process, please do try to track down someone who can and will legitimately give you permission for a good photo they took. - Jmabel ! talk 06:23, 14 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel Yep, I will try my best, for now we will use photos that I uploaded from The Tyrant's press. Thank you for your kindness, I really appreciate it. Have a nice day! Илона И (talk) 16:58, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I believed that this image would be public domain in both France and the USA since both the magazine it came from (La Cinématographie française) and the film's production company (Ciné France) had folded 70 years ago. However, it was flagged as being improperly tagged and now I'm not sure if it's considered public domain in France, despite obtaining it from Bibliothèque nationale de France/gallica.bnf.fr. Their "about" section says that most of their material is free for non-commercial use, with credit. I know very little about french copyright law and want to be certain that this image complies with Wikipedia's rules.

--Baby Purple Bat (talk) 03:26, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Yann: you tagged it. What do you want covered that isn't covered?
The existing claimed license covered the (questionable) French side but not the (clear) U.S. side; I will add "expired" to cover the latter, but the French side may be a problem. - Jmabel ! talk 04:26, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The "... insert a license" template was placed automatically at the moment of upload, for some reason, not sure why. I think Yann just adds a "no licence" template in such cases to make sure that inattentive uploaders are notified. -- Asclepias (talk) 09:35, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Baby Purple Bat: Hello,
  • On Commons, file pages must have a template that specifies the copyright status of the work in the United States and a template that specifies the status of the work in the country of origin (if other than the U.S.). Your upload was missing a U.S. template. For some reason, the upload system of Commons automatically placed on the page a warning "insert a license". That warning is now removed.
  • However, there is also an important problem with your uploads in general. You cannot use a template "PD-old", which is based on the death year of the author, when you do not even identify the author. (Unless a work is really very old.) For works made in the 1920s, authors could well have lived past 1955 (70 years ago). For each work, you must do a rigorous research to identify the author and the year of death. And then indicate the author in the "author" field in the Commons page and only then use a PD-old template, if applicable. The name of a production company is not an author (excepted possibly in rare cases). For works such as films, the authors are almost always known. The laws of the specific country define who are the authors. It can be the director or other people. For artistic film posters, the author is the artist and the author can sometimes be known even when the poster is not signed. If, after a serious research, you conclude that the author of a work is really unknown (not unknown only to you, but unknown to specialists in the field), then you can use a template describing the situation, for example PD-anon-70-EU, if applicable. If the author is known but the year of death is unknown and if the work was made before 1905, you can use PD-old-assumed, if applicable. Please review your uploads to identify the known authors in the "author" field, or Unknown if really unknown, and to adjust the status templates if necessary.
  • The Gallica notices are notoriously unreliable. They sometimes claim copyrights on works that are in the public domain and they sometimes mark as public domain works that are not, or not entirely, in the public domain. To complicate matters more, since a few years, they have removed the public domain tags in their notices in French but they left them in the versions of their notices in English. In the case of your upload "File:600,000 francs par mois (1926).png", the Gallica notice is supposed to refer simplistically to the publication date of the magazine. It ignores the actual copyright status of the included items, which is what must be determined for Commons.
-- Asclepias (talk) 10:59, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, your response is very helpful! I was curious, for french films, how many people are considered the author? Is it just the director, writers, or does it extend to the rest of the crew and even to the cast? I'm still new here and want to make sure I edit my previous and future uploads to wikipedia standards. Baby Purple Bat (talk) 16:40, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Baby Purple Bat: See article L113-7 of the Code de la propriété intellectuelle. However, I'm not sure how that applies to a single frame or to a set photo. You can ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright for more details. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:59, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DimensionalFusion (talk) 12:03, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to add this during the Upload Wizard, but here is how you do it after uploading: You edit the "Summary" section of a page and find the code that says |permission= and then add the link after the equals sign. HyperAnd (talk) 12:32, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jolanda1900: I'm guessing you mean the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), rather than one of the hundreds of others.
I'm guessing you were the purchaser, but your use of passive voice leaves that an open question.
Sounds like a question entirely for en-wiki, not sure why you asked it on Commons, but I would think that someone paying Getty in no way changes the policies at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. This would still be just like you cannot upload an arbitrary photo you took to en-wiki and say "this can be used on en-wiki, but not elsewhere." That's still a policy violation, unacceptable non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 18:57, 15 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sound file plays the wrong music

[edit]

I made a mistake and I hope you can help. The sound file I uploaded Steel_guitar_playing_Hawaiian_music.ogg plays the wrong music. I want to delete it. In its place I have uploaded the correct music to a similarly-named file Sound_of_a_Steel_guitar_playing_Hawaiian_music.ogg Can you make the correction? Logos and/or text in screenshots of CC-licensed videos

[edit]

As someone who is new to Wikimedia Commons, I would like to ask a question. Sorry if it has been answered before or if I missed something that I could've easily looked-up myself.

Do I have to cut out any potential non-free text and/or logos if I take a screenshot of somewhere in a CC-licensed video that features them, even if the video is under a CC license itself or can I leave such a screenshot as it is and upload it without it being flagged has having non-free content in it?

I'm asking because everything I uploaded so far(only two screenshots, more specifically) doesn't feature any non-free logos and/or text besides whatever is in the background of those screenshots. ~Berilo Linea~ (talk) 15:03, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@~Berilo Linea~: Hi, and welcome. The only one I see as problematic is File:Mohammed Abu al-Khair Shukri.png - you could blur the contents of the banner to be on the safe side. See also COM:DM.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:09, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G. Done, I uploaded a new version of the screenshot now. What do you think of File:Mohammed Abu al-Khair Shukri 2.png, though? ~Berilo Linea~ (talk) 19:46, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@~Berilo Linea~: It depends on the particular situation. If they are visible enough in the image, non-free items should be cropped out, entirely or partially, depending on what is reasonable, or blurred. However, in some particular cases, it is not be necessary to remove items. For example, if the item is below the threshold for being copyrightable. Also, if the item is so small and insignificant in the image that it can be considered merely incidental. The linked pages provide more details. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:18, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Ronaldo (GA) Barcelos Angsaz (talk) 04:21, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Angsaz: Typically no, though if you are active on Commons or on some other Wikimedia project, then a small number of pictures specifically for your user talk page are OK. They need to be appropriately licensed though: unless they are selfies, someone other than you was the photographer and presumably owns the copyright, so they are the only person who can offer a license, not you. You would probably do well to read Commons:Scope. Do remember, this is not a social media site.

According to w:A_Woman_of_the_Sea, the photographs of this movie were created in 1926 and most of them only published in 2008. Such images are copyrighted until 70 years after the death of the author (if known) or 120 years after creation (see COM:HIRTLE). The book cover itself is recent and certainly still copyrighted (here's the author's website: http://www.ednapurviance.com/home_enlargesample.html ). It might be free, if the underlying photo is free, because there's not much original authorship in the design of the book cover. You could try to contact the book's author for copyright information.
Summary: the book cover might be free to use, but we don't have enough information to say for sure.

CCY Code

Please be logged in while you follow up on your own question.
That helps clarify, but I don't really know what you mean by a license code. If you are talking about files here on Wikimedia Commons, the license is always explicit on the file page, and is usually also in the structured data. You need to be a bit careful with the attribution, because that is not always explicit in the license, and may sometimes be found elsewhere on the page.
If that is not what you are asking, you will have to be clearer. - Jmabel ! talk 23:39, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Well, indeed. So, you already know that the abuse filter filtered it out and that your account is not allowed to upload pdfs. It's not useful to retry the same thing seven times. If the abuse filter blocked the upload the first time, it will block it the seventh time. Also, this website is not the place to advertise the stocks of a company. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:11, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was not advertising stocks of any company. I was providing information of how despite strong Q4FY25 results Dixon Technology stocks slipped down. What should be the next move ahead. Intensify Research (talk) 11:35, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your filename litterally includes "...Top Nifty 50 Stock to Buy..." and your file description reads "Shares of [company name] are in focus today after the firm reported an impressive result for the Q4 FY25 - stock market strategy - intensify research services", which looks like advertising both that firm and your own company. Anyway, there's no next move ahead for this file right now. As specified in the filter information, your new account is not allowed to upload pdf files until it has contributed a sufficient number of valid edits. However, you can upload other types of files, as long as they are in scope. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:30, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G.: really, no need to ask that last question. The content is completely inappropriate for Commons, whether the user has a vested interest or not.
@Intensify Research: technically speaking, the content was filtered because relatively new users cannot upload PDFs. But based on what you seem to have been trying to upload, it's a good illustration of why we have that rule. Please read COM:SCOPE. Hello,

I am trying to upload a photograph of Marian Beattie released by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) related to a renewed public appeal in 2025 about her unsolved 1973 murder case. The image is from the official PSNI website and is licensed under the UK Open Government Licence v3.0 (OGL).

However, I am receiving warnings about insufficient copyright and licensing information, and I want to make sure the upload meets Wikimedia Commons’ requirements so the file is not deleted.

Could you please advise me on:

How best to correctly provide the licensing information and source details on the upload page?

Whether the OGL license template OGL3 is sufficient for this image?

Any additional information or wording you recommend including in the description or licensing fields?

Thank you very much for your help!

--ItsShandog (talk) 14:28, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@ItsShandog: Hello, The template for OGL 3 is sufficient IF the photo is truly under OGL 3. You wrote that the PSNI is the author, but that seems very unlikely. Why would they have taken a photo of this person before they worked on the case? It seems more likely that the photo was created by someone else. You wrote that the photo is under OGL 3, but you did not specify how it would have come to be under OGL 3. Evidence would be needed for those statements about the authorship and the license. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:49, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure who the original author of the photo is, but since it was recently released in an appeal by the PSNI, I thought it was best to credit them as the author. However, I can change that if needed. According to the PSNI website, their images are used under the Open Government Licence. This is what it state's on their website. "The material featured on this page is subject to Crown copyright protection unless otherwise indicated. Crown copyright protected material (excluding departmental and agency logos) may be reproduced free of charge in any format or medium under the terms of the Open Government Licence." ItsShandog (talk) 17:20, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve been getting conflicting reports about the copyright status of the image. Some news sites credit both PSNI and PA, but the PSNI website has never credited anyone for the image. Since the copyright information is unclear, I believe it’s best to request the deletion of the image until I can confirm its proper licensing or ownership. I’m unsure if the image is under Crown copyright or copyrighted by the Press Association, so I’d prefer to delete the image until I can resolve the uncertainty. Any help with deletion would be appreciated as I've been trying to do it and cant figure it out. Thanks ItsShandog (talk) 18:31, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can you provide a link to the statement "The material featured on this page ..." as applying to this photo? I don't find it in their Terms and conditions or on the photo page. That statement seems to apply to the statistics section of the website. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:15, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've realised that now so I have had the picture removed. ItsShandog (talk) 20:49, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

File:SpicerArms.svg rendering issue

[edit]

At the moment, this file is showing up as a completely blank file (on wiki; it displays correctly and with out-of-frame bonus content if I download it and view it in Inkscape). I'm aware of a known issue with how Wikimedia renders SVGs that causes some theoretically-valid SVGs to display incorrectly here / on wikis, which the folks at this desk and/or Graphic Lab have had to spot-fix SVGs to overcome in the past, but in this case, I used this file on a Wiktionary page two years ago, so it must've shown up at that time (and the file itself hasn't been edited since then), so something in how Wikimedia renders SVGs must've changed to break it...? In any case, can someone make the file display? Thank you! -sche (talk) 17:13, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@-sche: Your idea is correct, something has changed. See for example Commons:Graphics village pump/July 2024#Coat of Arms not rendering correctly for an explanation. Many files uploaded by this user have the same problem. Aha! Thanks for the explanation. I didn't have the rights to overwrite the file, so I created a duplicate here which simply removes "clippath", which seems to result in the image displaying as expected. -sche (talk) 16:00, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

threshold of originality

[edit]

hello, i was wondering if this logo from PowerSchool [7] was eligible to be published under the threshold of originality policy. i'm currently writing a draft about this company, so i'm in need of an image for my lead. if this is above the threshold of originality, could i still publish this logo under fair use in wikipedia? i'm not really educated in copyright laws so any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks, Sam-you-ale (talk) 18:15, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sam-you-ale: TOO is different for each country. You don't say what country. This would be fine in the U.S., maybe not in the UK, if that helps. - Jmabel ! talk
@Jmabel: yes, this is for the U.S, thanks! Sam-you-ale (talk)

Copilot

[edit]

May I upload images generated by copilot?--Kikikiki.aka (talk) 08:55, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Commons:AI-generated media for details, but here is my interpretation:
  • Regarding copyright; the US, Indonesia, and other jurisdictions don't give copyright protection to AI works and hence in the public domain (can be uploaded here), unless it depicts a derivative work, such as a copyrighted character. Such derivative works can't be uploaded here unless the original work is in public domain or has a free license.
  • However, in other jurisdictions, such as the UK, they do give copyright protection. If the work was made in the UK, Hong Kong, etc. they can't be uploaded here without permission from the prompter. Note that this is really only a concern if you upload AI works prompted by someone else, as you will put a free license to cover those countries if you are the prompter.
  • Scope is a different and much bigger concern. Pretty much everything an AI makes could be depicted better by a human, whether photography or illustration, which makes the AI media lack educational value. For example, the AI likes being too sensationalist in the depiction such as putting distracting SciFi elements on a scientific concept. To put it in another way: "Why use AI media when you could use high quality non-AI media, or just simply generate it yourself?" So, subjects that are depicted with AI could be seen as redundant no matter how pretty the media is and it may be deleted. An exception to this is notable images, like this one, which garnered a lot of popularity and controversy. Such images have educational value to inform about such controversies.

Printing artwork onto fabric

[edit]

I'm an upcycler aka turn old clothing fabric etc into "wearable art" I would like to print out Christian themed artwork such as Angels Lions etc into fabric for applique (if you're familiar with magnolia Pearl kind of in that genre)but I don't want to get sued for copyright infringement is this allowed thank you Blackhillsboho (talk) 20:34, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Blackhillsboho: different images here are differently licensed, so there is no general answer. You have to look on the individual file pages for licensing terms. If the file is public-domain or CC-zero, you should be OK; if it is pretty much anything else, then you typically have requirements to credit the author (usually the photographer or artist) which might be difficult to meet in a garment.

Cutting watermark

[edit]

Hello, I am trying to cut the watermark off File:Fury 325 Carowinds POV.webm. I cut the watermark out using FFMPEG but cannot upload it due to the 100 mb limit. Is there a workaround to this in this case? Also, how did the original uploader upload this video if there is a 100 mb limit? It is a wonderful world (talk) 09:40, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Categories for different editions of a book

[edit]

Hello!

I have organised the files in Category:The horse, in the stable and the field and am now at a crossroads on how to categorize these images, since they come from different editions. I am debating whether they should all go in their own category or stay together in one. I don't know if there is a guideline on this, if not, I also very much welcome opinions on what would be better! :)

We have files from three editions of the book: 1869, 1871 and 1907. 1869 and 1871 are very similar in content and page numbers, 1907 has seen some additions so the page numbers don't align anymore. You can see it by this illustration:

My thoughts at the moment are that having just the one category would give a better overview, as no edition has a complete set of illustrations. (For example, page 134 only exists from the 1871 version while page 138 we only have from the 1869 version.) However, for linking with Wikidata, it would of course be better to have them all in their separate categories. So – hmm.

The category for the 1907 version has existed for a while, so at the moment we have two editions in the parent category and one edition sorted into its own category. I would like to find a consistent solution though.

Thank you for all replies and thoughts on this matter! Cheers, Fallen Sheep (talk) 17:09, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Categories not Appearing

[edit]

Recently someone has created a series of categories of the form: Category:London photographs taken on (D.M.Y.) and moving images from the Category:(M.Y) in London. However the new categories are not showing up on the image pages for some reason. Can someone explain why? Murgatroyd49 (talk) 20:44, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind providing some examples, so it will be easier to understand the problem? Tvpuppy (talk) 20:57, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Murgatroyd49: If we take as a random example the category "Category:London photographs taken on 2018-03-01", we can see that it uses the template "Template:London photographs taken on navbox", which contains the instruction "HIDDENCAT", which has the effect of making that category a hidden category, displayed in the image pages in the hidden categories line only for registered users who have not deactivated that option. If you are referring to something else, please specify. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:42, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
