How do I find vandalism?

I want to start by getting rid of vandalism but i don’t know how or where to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? - TrlSlasher — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrlSlasher (talkcontribs) 02:04, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. You can look in the "Recent Changes" Section under the Wikipedia Logo to your left. Thegooduser Let's Chat 02:13, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TrlSlasher: Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for wanting to make it better. Check out WP:VANDAL for guidance and tips for spotting and fighting vandalism. RudolfRed (talk) 02:14, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, TrlSlasher. In addition to what was said above, I highly recommend the Twinkle and navigation popup tools. They make finding and reverting vandalism, and also warning users, much easier. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Good luck out there! -- kewlgrapes (talk, contribs) 02:33, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Where do I go to get Twinkle? - TrlSlasher — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrlSlasher (talkcontribs) 02:42, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned on the Twinkle page, you enable it by turning it on in the gadgets page in your preferences. Here is a link: Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. -- kewlgrapes (talk, contribs) 02:50, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don’t see it in gadget preferences. Do I need to upgrade to get access? - TrlSlasher — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrlSlasher (talkcontribs) 03:07, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, not that I'm aware of. You should see it in the "Browsing" section, six boxes from the bottom of that section. By the way, you can sign your posts with ~~~~ to automatically create a link to your user and talk pages. It's a little more useful and faster than just typing out your name on each post. :) -- kewlgrapes (talk, contribs) 04:39, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No it’s not there. TrlSlasher (talk) 04:45, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TrlSlasher:, I have left you a note at Talk:Philip Percival, I suggest you just slow down a little and review some of Wikipedia's policies, particularly WP:3RR. Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 06:52, 12 April 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Confused

Although there are several sources for samsung galaxy j1 and samsung galaxy j2 too in the internet Wikipedia has an article only for samsung galaxy j5 but not for samsung galaxy j2 and j1 why ? —Big Hero 13:27, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is an articles about the Samsung Galaxy J1. Samsung Galaxy J2 redirects to the main Samsung Galaxy article. You can find information on it at Samsung Galaxy J series. --Jayron32 14:30, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Jayron32 I know Samsung galaxy j2 is redirected to Samsung Galaxy, but why there is no separate article for it? It is not notable enough or what ?—Big Hero 02:31, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. When articles exist at Wikipedia, it is because someone who is interested in the subject writes them. Ergo, if they don't exist, it means someone who was interested didn't write it. Ergo again, if you're interested, you're responsible for writing it, because no one else is. If you want to see an article on a subject, and one doesn't exist yet, do some research, collect sources, and start writing it! This is actually one of the Official Wikipedia Guidelines, see WP:BOLD, to wit: "Fix it yourself instead of just talking about it." --Jayron32 02:50, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This guide on creating your first article may also be of use Big Hero. If you have any questions about writing articles or the like, please feel free to let us know. --TheSandDoctor Talk 03:28, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Jayron32 I think its not notable enough so there is no article about it because most other smartphones have article about them. How do I know if it is notable enough or not ?—Big Hero 10:52, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's actually very easy. See WP:42 for a quick explanation. The way you know if something is notable enough is if there is sufficient amounts of independent reliable writing about the subject. That is, if people outside of Wikipedia, and entirely independent of the subject (in this case the Samsung corporation) have written enough text that you could use that text to write a reasonably comprehensive encyclopedia article. In other words, something is notable enough if you can write a fully-referenced quality Wikipedia article about it. --Jayron32 11:58, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you & a question

Hello,

Thank you for inviting me to the Tea House.

I published my first draft today and am waiting for (hopefully) approval.

Each time I tried to upload a photo, it was rejected; even though I took the photos and they did not represent any copyrighted items. I would like to know what I have to do to successfully upload a photo from my own collection.

D Turner — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dickturner (talkcontribs) 17:34, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dickturner. I'm a little confused. It doesn't look like you've ever had an uploaded file deleted on either English Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. What do you mean exactly when you say they've been rejected? GMGtalk 18:53, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GreenmeansGo , Thank you very much for responding. I have just submitted an article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:The_Smile_Machine). What I meant was, and I am sorry for the confusion, is that, when in creating my article, I tried to upload a photo from my personal collection (of things that I made), each time I got a message saying that there appeared to be some "issue" with the photo as to possible copyright (or other) issues. Thus, my article is currently without photos. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dickturner (talkcontribs) 11:35, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New Wikipedia Page

Hi.

I've been working on a Wikipedia page and I need a pro to take a look at it to see if I'm on the right track. It's not done - a draft only. Can someone take a look and let me know how it's going? This is my first go at a Wiki page so don't tear me to shreds! :)

It's a bio page on Judith Weinshall Liberman

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Judith_Weinshall_Liberman&action=submit

Thanks! GeorgeGeorge David NH (talk) 18:49, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is about Judith Weinshall Liberman. As it stands, it cites no sources, and therefore fails to establish that its subject is notable, a serious omission. Its text also includes some direct external links, which should be removed. Maproom (talk) 19:34, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Now moved to Draft:Judith Weinshall Liberman. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 05:07, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Awards and signature

Hey everyone thanks for your help so far! My next question is that I noticed a lot of people have awards on their pages and I was wondering how I get them (like how many edits or vandalism undo’s)? And does having certain awards or a certain number of them unlock more features like more userboxes or Twinkle? Also I noticed that a lot of people have cool signatures with different colors and fonts etc but mine is just my username - so is that something else I get access to when I have better stats, or what?

Sorry to bother everyone! I’m just trying to get a handle on how all this works still. Thanks! TrlSlasher (talk) 23:52, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TrlSlasher: There is Service Awards, but it's all just for fun. After you have 10 edits and your account is 4 days old, you become autoconfirmed which allows you to do more things than a brand-new account, but that's it. You should concentrate on making edits to articles to improve the encyclopedia, and not be concerned about awards. If you do well, someone may give you a WP:BARNSTAR. RudolfRed (talk) 00:58, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hello TrlSlasher. Welcome - it's no bother at all. The most common sort of award you see on another editor's Talk page are called Barnstars - a kind of "well done!" sticker to give someone for doing a great job at something...or even a bit of 'wikilove', which is just a sort of randomly being friendly sticker (or so I'm told!). See Wikipedia:Barnstars for more info on these. But there's also other types, which you can find out about at Wikipedia:Awards.
You may also see on editors' Userpages various 'Userboxes' which you can add to declare something about yourself. There are tons of these, all listed at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Galleries, covering everything from liking cheese to fighting vandals, or from how many edits you've made, to where you live. (OK, I may have made the first one up, but do come back and tell me if you do actually find one about cheese!)
You can win up to 15 'badges' for doing the various steps in The Wikipedia Adventure which I'd recommend to all new editors here -they get automatically added to your userpage. Finally, at one time the Teahouse hosts even used to give out badges for folk asking great questions here, or for giving helpful answers and stuff, though I don't think these get used much nowadays. I hope this gives a useful background to them all, and that you enjoy your time editing here. Come back anytime if you have problems editing. List of authoritarian regimes supported by the United States

I needed this article, and noted it no longer exists. How can I found out why that is? Is there anyway I see the old Talk-page, or the Deletion discussion? Thank you Amin (Talk) 00:36, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Amin: It was deleted following the discussion here: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_authoritarian_regimes_supported_by_the_United_States_(2nd_nomination) RudolfRed (talk) 00:46, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: Thank you. Just so I learn the method, how did you found out the correct link for this discussion? Amin (Talk) 03:48, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Amin, if you click on List of authoritarian regimes supported by the United States, you will be taken to a page which displays the deletion log for the article. That log includes a link to the deletion discussion, or to the deletion reason if there was no discussion. This applied to any deleted Wikipedia page, click on a red link to it to see all past deletion logs. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 05:05, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The article still exists. So-called deletion just means that access has been restricted to privileged users. And because the content has a CC licence, you will find plenty of copies elsewhere. Just Google for the title to find them. Andrew D. (talk) 07:06, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article Published

Hi,

I wouldlike to know if I publish an article and you find it not suitable for wikipedia are you going to help me out? I mean will you suggest edits or sources that I can use for references? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lily Newgate (talkcontribs) 06:31, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lily Newgate. If you feel there is a subject that you would like to write a Wikipedia article about, you can start by creating a draft. When you think the draft is ready, you can submit to Wikipedia:Articles for creation for review. If your draft is declined, an AfC reviewer will explain why and provide suggestions on what things should be improved. The actual writing part, however, is going to basically up to you to do at your own pace. Other editors may occasionally offer suggestions when asked or even make improvements/changes they think are needed and required by relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, but for the most part they will leave you alone out of deference. You can find out some more general information about writing articles in Wikipedia:Your first article.
Once, however, whatever your working on has been added to the article namespace, other editors are going to be less concerned about stepping on your toes than they are about making sure the article complies with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Others will freely edit the article as they deem necessary to bring it up to Wikipedia's standards. They will try to fix whatever problems can be fixed, but in some cases content not complying with relevant policies and guidelines may need to be removed. In the worst case scenario, the entire article may need to be deleted if its problems cannot be fixed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:48, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I retired from Wikipedia. Then came back. And quit again. What can I do to get better at editing?

I retired for a reason: I'm feel like I'm doing a pretty bad job. If you scroll through my edits, you'll see they are worse edits like accidentally undoing an IP user's reverted vandalism (they reverted their own vandalism and I undid it by blanking the page on accident), reverting well sourced edits, and some 4 other edits. I plan on deleting my account if I don't get the help I need. Mostly from lack of welcoming me. Or other than that to retire permanently. But I need some special help. Like can't an admin cover me editing? If I can't get any help, I'll retire and probably delete my account (if it's possible). HorsesARENiceRide me to my talk page 06:38, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

People have been quite welcoming to you. One way to enjoy wikipedia is to read the articles and enjoy editing about subjects you are interested in. Perhaps give reverting problematic edits a rest while you learn the basics and read up on some of wikipedia policies. Once you have more experience, you will make less mistakes. We all make mistakes sometimes, the important thing is to learn from them. You can try asking at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user for someone who can give you the special help you ask for.Polyamorph (talk) 06:45, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
HAN - your initial approach - riding in on a white horse (well, a horse) - to rescue articles by deleting what you identified as vandalism or otherwise wrong, got you in harm's way. May I suggest you focus for a while on being an additionalist rather than a deletionist? While Deletionism is thought of by many as a means to improve Wikipedia, newbies who start out as self-appointed deletion police can run into land mines, in the form of pushback (and headslaps) from highly experienced editors who do not take kindly to someone trampling their content. So, stay. David notMD (talk) 10:26, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @HorsesAreNice: As linked above, you can ask for mentoring at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user, or you can come back at the Teahouse everytime you have a question. That your first edits were bad is not a big problem if you are willing and able to improve. However, I would advise to drop the request to be tutored specifically by an administrator; I guess what you actually meant is to ask for an "experienced user" (there is no need for admin tools to counsel a new user) but (especially when coupled with mentions of departure) requesting specifically an admin comes across as being high-maintenance. I assume that this is about your user page, User:Vermaforbulksms. Your user page is intended for you to write about yourself and your activities in Wikipedia. Instead, you have used it to write an advertisement. Wikipedia should not be used for promotion, and does not allow advertisements. What you wrote will soon be deleted. Just to note that I have modified your post above, Vermaforbulksms, because you accidentally nominated the Teahouse for speedy deletion by activating the {{db-spam}} template. Cordless Larry (talk) 07:39, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can anyone figure out how to fix Combined Bomber Offensive#CBO Plan

At the very end of the section, in the "1944 October" row of the table, is a messed-up footnote whose wikitext is:

{{sfn|Kreis|1996|p={{Clarify|p. 154,185,or 242?|date=June 2010}}}}

I have figured out that the {{Clarify}} wants a |reason= before the text, but that doesn't fix the major problem, which is that {{sfn}} can't handle the wikitext emitted by {{clarify}}. It tries to use the |p= parameter as part of the anchor name, and ends up including illegal characters resulting in garbled markup.

But I can't figure out an alternate way to get the appropriate cleanup category included in the footnote.

Quite simply, I'm not sure what The Right Thing to do in this situation is. Move the {{clarify}} to the main text (after the closing }})? Fix {{sfn}} to sanitize its inputs correctly?

Any ideas? 23.83.37.241 (talk) 07:26, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The reference once read <ref name=Kreis/>{{clarify|p. 154,185,or 242?}}. It was converted to {{sfn|Kreis|1996}}, but with a garbled form of the clarify tag inside the reference, where it made no sense. I have tried to put it all back in a sensible state. Maproom (talk) 07:48, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom: Thank you! I added the "reason=" prefix I mentioned, so the text is visible when hovered over. 23.83.37.241 (talk) 10:55, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Google Maps is not a WP:Reliable source. I've been trying to correct a mis-naming of a location for the past ten years, but Google doesn't do anything to correct the error. Dbfirs 12:21, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Torontofacts, this is not a "breech", it is merely a flaw in Google Maps's security model. Secondly as per WP:NOTNEWS this probably dos not belong in a Wikipedia article at all, unless there are loner term secondary sources covering it, of highr reliability and impact han a local news story. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 12:28, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Torontofacts. I'm not totally sure that Sydney Eatz easily meets our standards for notability, since virtually all of the news coverage about her seems to be fairly niche local coverage in the Toronto Star, with as far as I can tell, essentially no coverage otherwise. As to how you add media to the article, (assuming there actually is additional substantial sources available that I'm just missing), the short answer is that you need to find media that is free for public use, and for articles on living persons, we generally cannot use anything that is non-free. Unfortunately, this often means that articles on living persons have to wait for an extended period of time for such media to become available. GMGtalk 12:35, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image license and adding fairuse , etc

Hi want to know how the more experience editors and other editiors license images or where they get images of for (eg. Biography on like Ryan gosling) where can I get a images or fair use and that type of stuff, also when screenshoting a game or app how does what licenses apply to these DashDog01 (talk) 13:25, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • @DashDog01: The general principles first: images used in Wikipedia article should be under a free license if possible, and taken from our sister project Wikimedia Commons. You can already find a lot of free images there, or upload your own freely-licensed pictures. If no free license applies, certain non-free images are accepted under strict circumstances, outlined at WP:NFCC; in that case, the images should be uploaded locally (via Special:Upload on Wikipedia, NOT on Commons). (After the upload, see WP:IMAGE for how to include those in articles)
For photographs of living people, we consider that the "no free equivalent could be created" clause (NFCC #1) means that a free license is necessary (because if no free photograph exist, someone could always go and ask for a freely-licensed photograph). This usually means that a Wikipedian or a Commons user takes it themselves. In the particular case of Ryan Gosling, clicking through the article image brings you to File:Ryan Gosling by Gage Skidmore.jpg, uploaded by the photographer.
For video game screenshots, WP:SCREENSHOT will tell you that screenshots you take yourself are non-free but pass NFCC if they are used in a relevant article (NFCC #7) and at a low resolution (NFCC #3 b).
If all that looks complicated, that's because it is. In general, you can ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions if you have specific questions. TigraanClick here to contact me 13:47, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

D - you keep on showing up at Teahouse with questions, but despite your having done hundreds of edits to your own User page and Talk page, you have yet to make any useful edits to articles. Stop proclaiming how you are against vandalism, paid editing, single-purpose edits, or aspire to being an Administrator some day (your Userboxes), and get to work. David notMD (talk) 14:18, 13 April 2018 (UTC) Hi yi captainDashDog01 (talk) 14:28, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DashDog01, for a biography article, one of the best ways is to visit the person or attend a public event where the person is speaking, and take a photo yourself. Similarly, one can take photos of a building or site. If you take it yourself, there is no copyright issue. One can also ask a person for an image that s/he is willing to release under a free license.
I must agree with the comments just above, try some actual editing and it may illuminate your issues better than any answer here could. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 14:50, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I created a biograpghy page Nwankwo Sonia and it was not published because i didnt get enough sources or proper references for the article. Hello, Ohiwere Kelvis. Let us take a look at the currently cited sources in Draft:Sonia Nwankwo.
  • There is one cite to actorsguildofnigeriaabuja.com, which gives basic info about Nwankwo Sonia, but does not even list heer various roles.
  • There are two cites to different pages (for different films) from www.nigeriamovienetwork.com. Neither mentions Nwankwo Sonia at all. Neither lists the cast of the movie. I am not sure how reliable this site is as a source in any case.
  • There is one cite to a page from Waploaded Movies. This appears to be a site where one can download various films. i haven't tried to check if it is violating the copyright on the films. in any case it doesn't seem to mention Nwankwo at all.
  • There is one cite to a page from NetNaija. This also seems to be a film download site. Again it does not so much as mention Nwankwo.
None of these are in any way helpful in establishing Nwankwo's notability. To do nthat, there must be multiple independent published reliable sources that discuss her specifically: 3-4 paragraphs or more 'about her from each source. Until this minimum level of sourcing is achieved, there cannot be an article about her. Please read our guideline on the notability of actors. You can only get the article published here on Wikipedia by finding and citing those sources. So far the co8unt of good sources cited is zero.

Another article doesn’t redirect to the correct page

Looks like I have another one to report. The article Emoji Domain is supposed to redirect to Emoji domain, but it redirects to Internationalized domain name instead. It was redirected because of a double redirect. An emoji domain is an internationalized domain name. However, the one with the lowercase D is no lomger a redirect. Asking for a review

I feel I have forgotten a key step - how to ask to have a draft article reviewed. I have created two, recently Dorothy Travers Smith and Frances Beckett — Preceding unsigned comment added by JaneMaxwell63 (talkcontribs) 09:14, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JaneMaxwell63 and welcome to the Teahouse. Neither of these articles now are or ever were "drafts" in the technical sense. That is their page names did not start with "Draft:". They are simply recently created articles. Like any article, anyone may edit them, suggest improvements, or even suggest that the community discuss whether to delete them. But no "gstekeeper" review is required.
Honestly, had these been created as drafts via the article wizard and sent to articles for creation for review, I doubt that either would have been accepted in their current state. They simply have too few source citations, and they do not make fully clear in what ways their subjects are significant in my view.ow that does not mean that the articles should not exist, but rather that they should be improved. However if the cannot be improved, then we might need to consider if they should remain here. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 21:26, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting facts

I found some facts:

  1. Most FA-class and GA-class biographies are about deceased people or aged living people. There are very few FA-class and GA-class biographys about young people. Why?
  2. Only 10%-20% AFC submissions can be accepted. Why?

Omega68537 (talk) 09:20, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Welcome to the Teahouse, Omega68537. The answers to your questions are simple. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, we rely on what the world's written about people. FA and GA class articles require, as a minimum, many such sources, and FA articles in particular a hundred or more citations. Except in the entertainment and sports fields, few young people have ever gained the attention of the world to the degree that (say) multiple critical biographies have been written about them, and I'd bet you that the overwhelming majority of FA/GA articles about living people younger than 40 are about singers, actors or athletes.

As to your second question, you're not quite accurate. It's not that a low percentage of AfC drafts can be accepted. It's that not many are accepted. The vast majority of such articles are submitted by relative novices to Wikipedia, who find that creating new articles while unfamiliar with Wikipedia notability standards and formatting is a hard task, and often requires multiple attempts at it. Editing wikidata and combining transwiki articles

Hello, I'm a bit lost on editing links within wikidata.

I'm trying to combine https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laminointi with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamination. So far I've added the Finnish label and description and the wikipedia link. However, before adding the wikipedia link I was asked to remove the entry from the old wikidata page: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11874530, which I did and managed to get the entry listed into the main wikidata page here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q384943. But the link to the Finnish page doesn't show up in the languages bar? Do wikidata edits have to go through administration or did I do something wrong? NinuKinuski (talk) 11:15, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, NinuKinuski. I've purged the page Lamination, and it appears now. (I don't think it did before I purged it, but I'm not certain, because I was stupidly looking under 'f' rather than 's' in the sidebar.) --ColinFine (talk) 18:28, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. If you are in a dispute with another editor, you should first attempt to discuss the matter on the article talk page. If that does not work, there are dispute resolution procedures that can be used.
While you don't have to register a username, doing so does provide some benefits, one being that your edits are attributed to you regardless of your IP. 331dot (talk) 14:24, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ANI is not for content disputes; resolving content disputes must be done through dispute resolution procedures(that I linked to above). If other parties are edit warring, you can report them to the edit warring board(though your actions may be examined as well). 331dot (talk) 00:11, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Info To Tupac Shakur Personal Life On His Wiki Page

WP is for confirmed facts that are substantiate by credible sources. If it is so common knowledge then it should not be a problem to find a credible source. Draft:Pyramid over Moscow. Help needed

This Draft:Pyramid over Moscow was declined twice. I'm not dissapointed with declining the page. This is my debutant page. But I'm not sure what exactly is wrong.

First I found reliable sources that are independent of the subject, such as New York Post, the Telegraf, Mirror.Co.Uk, etc. Russian VGTRK, Russia Today, Echo of Moscow radio, etc.

Do I need more of them? They are saying all the same, so I chose the most valuable

Second I have expanded the cultural aspect and added UFO theories with 3 reliable observers, observing 'Pyramod' directly, Nick Pope, Nicolai Levashov and Kosmopoisk.

Right now I'm just a bit confused what I've missed.

The article itself is at the Categories of viral videos, also UFO. And 'Pyramid' fits these categories as long as video became viral and sparkled mass-media reaction and buzzed ufology society. Looks like the subject of the page, the 'Pyramid over Moscow' is significant enough for Wiki; and that's me who's doing something wrong with the description

Thanks in advance for help. Aleksandr Reznichenko (talk) 13:42, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aleksandr Reznichenko, and welcome to the Teahouse? Did you ask Template:U&, who most recently declined this draft, what s/he thought it needed? It is perhaps unfortunate than no specific comment was left along with the decline notice.
  • Not all of the sources you cite are highly reliable. The London Daily Mail has such a bad reputation for accuracy that including it as a source actually hurts any article it is used in. The NY Post does not have the very best reputation either. I cannot evaluate the non-English-language sources.
  • The final paragraph, in which you state some conclusions drawn about the cause of the "pyramid" is uncited. Can you include a citation for these statements?
  • This event occurred in 2009. Has it gotten any coverage since then? Any that was more than a short time after the event? According to WP:SUSTAINED: Brief bursts of news coverage may not sufficiently demonstrate notability. However, sustained coverage is an indicator of notability, as described by notability of events. Can you find and cite sources to show any sustained interest in this "pyramid"?
  • Note also that WP:PERSISTENCE says: Events that are only covered in sources published during or immediately after an event, without further analysis or discussion, are likely not suitable for an encyclopedia article.. This i much the same idea as the previous point, and I fear that this event will not qualify under this guideline.
I hope that these observations and sugestions are helpful. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 21:07, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • First of all thanks for helping. It really helps. Thank you
  • DESiegel said "Did you ask Template:U&, who most recently declined this draft, what s/he thought it needed? It is perhaps unfortunate than no specific comment was left along with the decline notice". No I didn't ask. I will, thanks for pointing this out
  • I didn't know DailyMail and NYP aren't very much reliable. I will remove DailyMail citation.
  • DESiegel said "The final paragraph, in which you state some conclusions drawn about the cause of the "pyramid" is uncited. Can you include a citation for these statements?" In fact THIS IS a citation. But this is my own translation from RU to ENG. There's no official translation and that, perhaps, is the problem. Is there anything I can do in such situation?
  • As for brief bursts of news coverage - yes bursts were indeed 'brief'. But the whole artice is in Category of 'Viral videos'. How is this possible to write ANYTHING for that Category, not being brief? For example this Arrest of Vladimir Putin viral video was also covered by news briefly, but this page exists. Nearly all virals List of viral videos were covered by news briefly.
  • Maybe I should describe 'Pyramid' more like here 2 Girls 1 Cup for example? Chapters like 'Production', 'Background', 'Impact', 'Media recognition'? I can do that, rewrite whole page for 'Pyramid' in that manner

Inserting photos

I am new at learning about editing in Wikipedia. As I tried to add a photo I was confronted by the screen that asked if I was the owner of the photo. I am not the owner of the photo specifically, but the Wikipedia entry pertains to my partner. The photo was taken while he was in office, and we would like to add it to his Wikipedia bio. How should I handle this? Is it ok to add it since the photo is of him even though I guess officially the state where he served in office would be the official owner? Thank you for help on this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GOPHERUS (talkcontribs) 14:53, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The copyright usually belongs to the photographer, though in this case it might well belong to the state. The owner of the copyright must release the photo under a suitable licence if it is uploaded to WP:Commons. You could take a new photo yourself and release that version, but that's probably not what you want. Wikipedia:Images gives general guidance. Dbfirs 16:05, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hosting

Hi, who can become a Teahouse host? I just tried to, but the page after blocks me from editing. Thanks in advance! 07Alpha55 (talk) 18:34, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, 07Alpha55. I wasn't completely sure myself, but it looks like the formal requirements are to have 30 days and 500 edits of experience. I think you're a bit short on edits. But don't let that discourage you from popping in and answering questions, if you feel comfortable doing so! -- kewlgrapes (talk, contribs) 20:22, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, 07Alpha55 welcome to our Teahouse. Just to expand on the succinct reply from Kewlgrapes above, you've probably already seen the suggested minimum requirements for being a host (see this page)? I guess the key thing to assisting at the Teahouse is having a reasonable experience of editing under your belt and a fair understanding of Wikipedia's processes and policies, and definitely having a friendly approach to helping people and explaining stuff. (Plus maybe also being good at making tea every month or so for everyone!) But even just hanging around here and seeing new questions being asked and answered by hosts is a great way to learn things. It's certainly helped me acquire new skills. I contribute when I can, but try not to jump in with an answer if I'm not confident about my knowledge unless, that is, I see a difficult question has gone unanswered for a whole day. Then I might have a bash at helping out, but I do then try to make it clear I'm not very experienced in that particular area. (And sometimes I might make a mistake and another host will point out my error, as happened recently.) Sometimes we see quite new editors bringing a very refreshing new perspective for other newcomers here, because those of us who've been around for quite a while tend to forget what it was like, and maybe we can't quite relate so easily to the experience of having one's edits rejected and not understanding why that happened. Having someone else explain what that feels like can, I guess, also be quite reassuring to other new editors here. After all, that's our aim - to assist and support every new editor in resolving problems and encouraging them to stay around and continue working constructively to build this amazing encyclopaedia. Having just looked back through your talk page, which you seem to have blanked a few times recently, I tend to think you could probably do with carrying on gaining a little more editing experience and understanding why some things are or aren't OK to do here. But do stick around, watch, listen and learn, and maybe contribute when you feel able and on confident ground to share your experiences to help others. I need help with the article Ed Krassenstein and I also would like to see the article stay. Since it’s a AFD candidate, could someone please help me keep the article. Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by LovelyGirl7 (talkcontribs)

@LovelyGirl7: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Looking at the article and discussion briefly, it seems that the major issues are the sources. To merit an article here, Krassenstein needs to have been written about with in depth coverage in independent reliable sources that indicate how he meets the notability guidelines for biographies. Most of the sources related to this person's tweets (which seems to be the claim to notability) are brief mentions. Once source has a little coverage, but it is a blog and blogs are not usually considered reliable sources as they usually lack editorial control and review(unlike a newspaper or TV news). Unless better sources are out there about this person in depth, I regret to say that I don't think this can be saved. I know that is likely disappointing, and I am sorry about that. However, all articles must meet the criteria for notability and sourcing. I think the best that you could hope for would be to ask that the article be transferred to Draft space or to your personal Sandbox if you think there is a chance this person will have better sources in the future. 331dot (talk) 20:28, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thegooduser. I take it yuou were refering to the addition of the statement Javed Hyder as Child Bihari. That was indeed unreferenced, but such statements when factual are often allowed to stand without a specific citation. However, in this case, it seems that the statement was incorrect, quite possibly deliberately so. This lists seven Missions, so just click on the next one to continue. There are 15 badges to collect in total. (It might be worth me mentioning that at one particular stage I also got stuck until I scrolled right down to the very bottom of the page and discovered the next instruction which had popped up there, but I had missed entirely. I'm not sure if this was your issue, or not, but just to warn you it can catch folk out.) Good luck with the rest of the Adventure - and with your move to university later in the year. Hi NatHillard, welcome to the Teahouse. I suspect Big Hero thinks it's the meta user page you want to delete but it appears to be the other user pages. You did right at the English Wikipedia. Different wikis have different templates and procedures. You can try to look for the wiki in the left pane of {{Db-u1}}, {{Db-g7}}, or the general {{Db}} if the first two are missing. Only administrators at the wiki can delete pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:16, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification, PrimeHunter - indeed I was referring to the local variants, apologies if this was unclear! Good to know the templates vary between wikis. Thanks,

Congdungngonhanh

What do I do about Congdungngonhanh making personal attacks on me [1] Jannaalo (talk) Jannaalo (talk) 12:50, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jannaalo: I have relocated your question which you posted in the wrong place, and have inserted it to be answered here (as is convention) at the bottom of the main Teahouse page. The Teahouse Talk page is only for matters relating to the running and operation of the Teahouse itself. I will endeavour to answer your question shortly, and you will receive another notification when that happens. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 16:01, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, Jannaalo, and welcome to our friendly Teahouse. In most difficult situations there are people on both sides, each believing they are right in something, and then getting increasingly frustrated and sometimes angry when the other editor continues to repeat the same actions again and aagin, without appearing to understand what they are doing wrong. Or at least, ignoring that fact. I have taken a quick look through the edits you and others made to the article entitled Linh Nga, and I am very pleased there has also been engagement between editors on its Talk Page. The Teahouse is not intended to be a forum for dispute resolution - there are other venues for that, overseen by experienced editors. You might wish to read more on this at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. But I would respectfully point out to you that my impression is that your repeated attempts to change, redirect and modify the article do not appear to have gone down well with some other editors. I see an administrator has now protected that page against further moves, and you have been asked on more than one occasion not to do this without proper reasoning and evidence. I think your repeated insistence on making those changes have irked other editors. Sometimes, when one person is not heeding the advice they have been given, they see the words used by the other person as aggressive and an attack upon them personally, and this might well be the perception here. In their frustrations, Congdungngonhanh's challenge to your edits may well have seemed like an attack upon you, but, for what my opinion is worth here, I feel it was born more out of frustration with your inability to take that advice. So I would recommend you not to try to make changes to that or any other article without citable evidence in future. What I mean by that is that, despite you personally knowing something about an individual 'for a fact', unless you can prove and demonstrate by means of a reference that fact to be true (i.e. to the satisfaction of everyone else here), you may not add that statement, and it will get reverted. Editors who indulge in repeated 'edit-warring' with one another do expose themselves to being blocked from editing for a period of time. I appreciate this can all be immensely frustrating, but this is how we work here. We pay little to no heed what other language Wikipedias say on the subject, although you may use non-English sources to back up any claim you wish to make. I would invite both you and any other editor to be respectful to one another. There are plenty of people here who disagree about some Wikipedia-related matter but who can carry on their discourse in a polite and collaborative manner. I hope this applies to edits made by everyone on this article. (Update: Since starting to draft this reply I realise there has been discussion in other fora (Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents) and no personal attack has been recognised there either. In future, please ask only one question in one forum to avoid duplicating volunteer effort and wasting their time. In other words, if you plan to ask a question at ANI, don't bring it here too, and do post it in the right place.) Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 16:42, 15 April 2018 (UTC)      [reply]

Oriental Ruthless Boy/Boys

I don’t really know how that much and it might get deleted soon if you won’t help me, please help a brother out I’m new to Wikipedia god bless — Preceding unsigned comment added by ORB 559 (talkcontribs) 19:05, 15 April 2018 (UTC) ORB 559[reply]

Hi ORB 559, welcome to the Teahouse. I don't think I will write the article for you, but I can give you advice on what you should look for. The most critical thing you need to find in order to prevent your article from being deleted is to go online or to a library and try to find reliable sources that discuss your topic: look for newspaper or magazine articles, book chapters, scholarly journal articles. Anything that offers independent and critical analysis of your subject goes a long way in showing that your topic is notable, i.e. worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia. You can present your findings by adding citations to your article or by listing them at the deletion discussion. Wikipedia has a special way of determining notability: we look at the amount of reliable sources that have discussed the topic. If a lot of other reputable people have written about a topic, we can presume that the topic is worth writing about. Conversely, if not very many other reputable people have written about a topic, perhaps we shouldn't include it in Wikipedia. Hope this helps. Mz7 (talk) 19:33, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to see graphs of statistics about editors?

Hello, years ago I used to enter a link that showed the statistics about users. There were pie charts etc with a graphical view of the numer of articles created, edited, reverted, etc. Can somebody give me that link?

Second question. Does anybody know if there is a way to see the articles I wrote or edited and then were featured in the Did You Know section?

Thanks in advance --★ Pikks ★ MsG 19:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Pikks: For the first question, maybe you're thinking of https://xtools.wmflabs.org/ec/en.wikipedia.org/Pikks ? :-) - TNT 19:16, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that was the one. Thank you. --★ Pikks ★ MsG 19:26, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And the answer to the second question is on your Talk page, as all nominators receive a notification about DYK nominations (see User talk:Pikks), although you can also see them via the link that There'sNoTime gave you - especially in this section. Welcome back to Wikipedia, and a warm welcome from all at the Teahouse, too. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 19:54, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Need article corrected....not sure what to do

I created an article to be published on Wikipedia. It was my first time doing so, and I clearly misundertood some things. What would be the best way to have an experienced editor fix the problems with it so it can be published? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jazzilisterwiki (talkcontribs) 20:39, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! I would suggest submitting a draft from your sandbox Here to avoid deletion. Good Luck and Welcome!Thegooduser Let's Chat 20:45, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jazzilisterwiki has already created a draft, Thegooduser. It's at Draft:Jasmine Lister. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:52, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jazzilisterwiki: Hello and welcome. Looking at your draft, it seems the main issue is that the content appears to be copied from elsewhere. As explained in the notice given with your draft being declined, Wikipedia cannot accept such content unless the content has an appropriate copyright. If you own the copyright, you can follow the procedure at the Donating Copyrighted Materials page, but if you don't, you are probably out of luck. Either way, Wikipedia much prefers original text.
I noticed that your username is basically the same as the person you wrote about, Jasmine Lister ("Jazz" I presume is short for Jasmine). If you are Jasmine Lister, you should review the policy on autobiographies before you do anything else; in short, autobiographical articles are highly discouraged(though not forbidden) as people naturally write favorably about themselves. If you are not Jasmine Lister, I would suggest that you need to change your username at WP:CHU. 331dot (talk) 20:51, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually Jasmine's mother. I tried to follow the general format of other some other Wikipedia pages of people with the same type of career path as Jasmine. She is googled a lot a will be googled a lot lot more within the next couple of weeks for reasons I cannot say at this time, but she needs a wikipedia page. Who can I hire to just create it correctly? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jazzilisterwiki (talkcontribs) 21:02, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jazzilisterwiki: Okay, you will definitely need to change your username, using one of the methods listed at WP:CHU. You will also need to review the conflict of interest policy at WP:COI. I think you also seem to have a common misconception about what Wikipedia is. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a means to promote someone or advance their career. No one "needs" a Wikipedia page(and, in fact there are good reasons to not want one) As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is only interested in what independent reliable sources write about an article subject. Wikipedia has no interest in what someone(or their representative) wishes to say about themselves, or how they want to be portrayed. You were correct to begin your effort as a draft, but we still cannot accept copyrighted content unless it has a license compatible with Wikipedia's or is in the public domain(which is not the case here). It will need to have original text with independent sources to support its content.
Regarding someone you could "hire", that isn't something that we can assist you with. There are people who claim to offer the service of writing a Wikipedia article, but often they are scams and even if they aren't, they cannot guarantee anything(such as that such an article would not be deleted). 331dot (talk) 21:21, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Giving proper references

Hi!

I am new and I need your help!

DI200 (a person? a bot?) keeps adding disconnected references to an article I wrote. At least they seem disconnected to me. They do not belong to works cited in the text. I thought it works like in a paper where you give the used literature in the end. Is this handled differently in Wiki?

I would like to ask this question directly to DI200, but I do not know how to contact this person. I received the following mail: "Dl2000‬ left a message on your talk page in "‪April 2018‬"...." but I cannot reply to it and find no option to write anything on his talk page.

Thanks for the help!

Katrinclaudia (talk) 21:06, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Katrinclaudia: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. You should be able to edit and post to his user talk page; click "Edit" at the top of User talk:Dl2000. 331dot (talk) 21:27, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) :Hello Katrinclaudia, welcome to our Teahouse. The user in question (Dl2000) left a note on you own talkpage to say that they had removed a large amount of copyrighted text which had been copy/pasted into the article, Sadananda. If you click the word 'talk' after their signature, you will arrive at their talkpage (and here's a link to it, too). To post a question to them, click "Add topic" - a tab which you'll see at the top of the page next to the 'View History' tab. You can add a subject heading and leave a note for them in the big box below that - just as you have done here. If you're in mobile view on a phone, things are laid out slightly differently. If you have problems, do come back. But be aware that we cannot allow copyrighted content on Wikipedia. What you add here must be based on referenced sources, but always be written in your own words. I hope this helps, Regards from the UK,Nick Moyes (talk) 21:28, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

oclc

Hi there,

I'm a new editor, and I'm updating the page of Leandro Soto Ortiz, at his request. In 'Works or Publications', I want to enter a new item, but I see 'oclc', and every other entry has a different number, but I don't know what they mean. Can anyone help me with this? Lauraj210 (talk) 21:57, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Lauraj210 and welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia. Did you not try clicking the hyperlinks to find out for yourself? Whilst I'm not familiar with this cataloguing system either, it soon becomes pretty clear this is the OCLC cataloguing system (WorldCat's Online Computer Library Center), and the hyperlinked number is the unique identifier for the work on that system (rather like an ISBN number we're all much more familiar with. The article has used a special template {{citation}} which allows you to enter those parameters. I presume you would look up the relevant work on the catalogue to retrieve its identifier. Once in the article, a user need only click the link to see the entry and which library holds copies. It would make sense to follow that system. But I don't think we want full lists of his publications -just a selection of the most significant ones. So please don't add more trivia.
As a new user, thank you for declaring on your user page that you have a conflict of interest with the subject. Are you being paid to do this promotional work? If so, you must also declare this, as per our policy which you must follow here: WP:PAID. The article is very poorly referenced and serves only to promote the artist based mostly on his own website. We do not need to have a directory of all his works, nor everyone involved. Nor do we need you to tell us to go to his website three or four times to find out more. Please remove those links - they do not conform with our Manual of Style. We need you to provide references independent of the subject which tell us what others have said about him. If you cannot do this, please delete the unsupported content, leaving just one 'External link' to his website or LinkedIn account, or whatever he uses. Wikipedia is only interested in people who others have talked about in depth. So, please, remove all the cruft (trivia), and go and get some better references - I think there are quite a lot out there - please try Google News or Google Books for starters. I am not confident that a library meta-data entry for a collection of papers is a good enough source on its own to support all the biographical information, though others might disagree with me. I would prefer to see this section additionally referenced from properly published sources. Work in major museums should be reference to those museums or news articles, not to the artist's own website. Then we can be confident he meets our notability criteria for artists. Sorry to sound a bit grumpy over this - but we need a good reliable encyclopaedia entry, not list upon list of what he's done from a website we could simply visit ourselves. Metric Vs Emperial

Does Wikipedia favour metric or imperial measurements. After all, due to the international usage of Wikipedia metric is more widely used. L.H. (talk) 01:32, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Lochlan Hanham: It depends on the article. See WP:UNIT RudolfRed (talk) 01:37, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Lochlan Hanham: Mainly we go by what the sources say, so we would mostly only use Imperial measurements in an article about the US where sources state amounts in Imperial (and we generally put the metric equivalent in parentheses). It's not purely the US, and the UK and Ireland also use Imperial for certain specific measurements despite generally using Metric. As a side-note, in articles about India we also use lakh and crore for amounts (with International numbers in parentheses) in cases where crowds or financial amounts are so-mentioned in sources.
