Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page provides a place to discuss new items for inclusion on In the news (ITN), a protected template on the Main Page (see past items in the ITN archives). Do not report errors in ITN items that are already on the Main Page here— discuss those at the relevant section of WP:ERRORS.

This candidates page is integrated with the daily pages of Portal:Current events. A light green header appears under each daily section – it includes transcluded Portal:Current events items for that day. You can discuss ITN candidates under the header.

Glossary

[edit]
  • Blurbs are one-sentence summaries of the news story.
    • Altblurbs, labelled alt1, alt2, etc., are alternative suggestions to cover the same story.
    • A target article, bolded in text, is the focus of the story. Each blurb must have at least one such article, but you may also link non-target articles.
  • Articles in the Ongoing line describe events getting continuous coverage.
  • The Recent deaths (RD) line includes any living thing whose death was recently announced. Consensus may decide to create a blurb for a recent death.

All articles linked in the ITN template must pass our standards of review. They should be up-to-date, demonstrate relevance via good sourcing and have at least an acceptable quality.

Nomination steps

[edit]
  • Make sure the item you want to nominate has an article that meets our minimum requirements and contains reliable coverage of a current event you want to create a blurb about. We will not post about events described in an article that fails our quality standards.
  • Find the correct section below for the date of the event (not the date nominated). Do not add sections for new dates manually – a bot does that for us each day at midnight (UTC).
  • Create a level 4 header with the article name (==== Your article here ====). Add (RD) or (Ongoing) if appropriate.
Then paste the {{ITN candidate}} template with its parameters and fill them in. The news source should be reliable, support your nomination and be in the article. Write your blurb in simple present tense. Below the template, briefly explain why we should post that event. After that, save your edit. Your nomination is ready!
  • You may add {{ITN note}} to the target article's talk page to let editors know about your nomination.

The better your article's quality, the better it covers the event and the wider its perceived significance (see WP:ITNSIGNIF for details), the better your chances of getting the blurb posted.

Headers

[edit]
  • When the article is ready, updated and there is consensus to post, you can mark the item as (Ready). Remove that wording if you feel the article fails any of these necessary criteria.
  • Admins should always separately verify whether these criteria are met before posting blurbs marked (Ready). For more guidance, check WP:ITN/A.
    • If satisfied, change the header to (Posted).
    • Where there is no consensus, or the article's quality remains poor, change the header to (Closed) or (Not posted).
    • Sometimes, editors ask to retract an already-posted nomination because of a fundamental error or because consensus changed. If you feel the community supports this, remove the item and mark the item as (Pulled).

Voicing an opinion on an item

[edit]

Format your comment to contain "support" or "oppose", and include a rationale for your choice. In particular, address the notability of the event, the quality of the article, and whether it has been updated.

Please do...

[edit]
  1. Pick an older item to review near the bottom of this page, before the eligibility runs out and the item scrolls off the page and gets abandoned in the archive, unused and forgotten.
  2. Review an item even if it has already been reviewed by another user. You may be the first to spot a problem, or the first to confirm that an identified problem was fixed. Piling on the list of "support!" votes will help administrators see what is ready to be posted on the Main Page.
  3. Tell about problems in articles if you see them. Be bold and fix them yourself if you know how, or tell others if it's not possible.

Please do not...

[edit]
  1. Add simple "support!" or "oppose!" votes without including your reasons. Similarly, curt replies such as "who?", "meh", or "duh!" are not helpful. A vote without reasoning means little for us, please elaborate yourself.
  2. Oppose an item just because the event is only relating to a single country, or failing to relate to one. We post a lot of such content, so these comments are generally unproductive.
  3. Accuse other editors of supporting, opposing or nominating due to a personal bias (such as ethnocentrism). We at ITN do not handle conflicts of interest.
  4. Comment on a story without first reading the relevant article(s).
  5. Oppose a recurring item here because you disagree with the recurring items criteria. Discuss them here.
  6. Use ITN as a forum for your own political or personal beliefs. Such comments are irrelevant to the outcome and are potentially disruptive.

Suggesting updates

[edit]

There are two places where you can request corrections to posted items:

  • Anything that does not change the intent of the blurb (spelling, grammar, markup issues, updating death tolls etc.) should be discussed at WP:Errors.
  • Discuss major changes in the blurb's intent or very complex updates as part of the current ITNC nomination.

Ongoing: Timeline of the Gaza war (16 May 2025 – present)

[edit]
Article: Timeline of the Gaza war (16 May 2025 – present) (talk · history · tag)
Ongoing item nomination (Post)

Nominator's comments: I know this was raised by a sock earlier. A similar request was made on the talk page as well. The Gaza war is a long running event. Readers would benefit from have the latest timeline linked alongside for the latest developments as the Gaza war article is pretty long and updates there though frequent, are minute making it hard for readers to notice the incremental updates. This would be an addition to the current ongoing item for the Gaza war entry in the following format: Gaza war (timeline). The timeline article may be updated to newer timeline page when necessary. – robertsky (talk) 12:39, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support Linking directly to the timeline is useful for readers. --MtPenguinMonster (talk) 13:39, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support per fact that almost every military conflict ongoing has a timeline that was added. 2606:9400:98A0:92A0:2DD0:1875:AD19:5736 (talk) 13:58, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose on quality: Simply listing every related event is not an encyclopedic approach to developing this timeline. Not every event is part of the bigger picture. For example, on May 15, we have this: "A home was set on fire by Israeli settlers in Deir Istiya." Sure, that happened, but what consequence does that have? To compare, the current Ukraine/Russia timeline seems far more focused on major aspects, not covering every daily event. The Sudanese is similar, and while this has been debated before, the Timeline of the M23 campaign (2025) is also approaching this from a more encyclopedic/narrative aspect. Masem (t) 13:59, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose on quality as per Masem. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:50, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Strong oppose - This isn't encyclopedic at all, this is just a list of stuff. It's all "the IDF said" (they're completely biased anyways) or "Al Jazeera". — EF5 14:54, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - the ongoing is already linked from the target page. I'd remove the other two ongoing as well - there's too much bloat already. The ongoing situation with the ethnic cleansing by Israel and terrorism by other groups covers more than Gaza - I don't even think we've targeted the right article. The Ukraine one is far too long - it's not even an invasion any more - we didn't call WWII "German invasion of Europe" - "Ukraine War" would suffice. Nfitz (talk) 16:11, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's comments: Government collapses are significant, especially as it took a very long time to form and it will likely be a very long time before a majority is formed again. Abcmaxx (talk) 09:20, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - not to sound hypocritical with my Mongolia vote below, but the Dutch government has a track record of taking months upon months to form a new government and select a new PM. The Kip (contribs) 15:59, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not forming a new regime. An election is due.Sportsnut24 (talk) 22:02, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per Kip - As a German, I can confirm how notoriously long coalition formation processes can be in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The current government needed over 8 months of formation, and even Mark Rutte needed one and a half months at best to form a cabinet. I'd support waiting it out if a new election is called, which is rather likely, and then post it. TheRoyalOne06 (talk) 16:38, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That'd be Belgium with the 2nd longest time to form a regime after Iraq.Sportsnut24 (talk) 22:03, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support on notability, however the article needs more updates besides the 2 sentences in the lede. Needs more information on the collapse itself (why did the PVV leave the coalition? is there more background behind disagreements on asylum policy). Natg 19 (talk) 16:57, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support elections have now been called. Added altblurb This post was made by orbitalbuzzsaw gang (talk) 18:04, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, so we wait to post the result of the general.Sportsnut24 (talk) 22:04, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support on notability once updated, per Natg. FlipandFlopped 20:38, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose 1. Blatant racist eurocentrism and bias, 2. we wait for elections. There is nothing here and the "caretaker" regime is still there, 3. Mongolia is not posted.Sportsnut24 (talk) 22:01, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
They're not mutually exclusive - you are welcome to do as I have done and support both nominations. Mongolia and the Netherlands both have nominations under way - it's not accurate that we would be deciding to post this but not to post Mongolia. Also, we have posted resignations separate from elections in the past (see e.g. resignation of Trudeau). FlipandFlopped 22:32, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - notable as the collapse of a government coalition. Like others have said I would prefer more updates to be added to the article first, but there's enough now for me to support. -bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez | me | talk to me! 22:36, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose A different breakup is dominating the news. If the claim is that the holding of elections is what's significant then we should wait on the result of them, as usual. Andrew🐉(talk) 06:58, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Article: Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene (talk · history · tag)
Blurb: Prime minister of Mongolia Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene (pictured) resigns after weeks of protests. (Post)
Alternative blurb: Prime minister of Mongolia Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene (pictured) resigns amid protests over corruption.
News source(s): BBC News, AP/AFP via DW News
Credits:

Nominator's comments: Oyun-Erdene will served as the caretaker until the new PM is chosen. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗷𝗮𝘆𝗮𝟲𝟳 (talk). 07:37, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support I see nothing wrong with the article quality and PM resigning is a notable event, especially as there were associated protests. Is this not ITN/R though? Abcmaxx (talk) 09:23, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Its the change of such a position thats ITNR, and that will not happen for 30 days per the AP article (Oyun-Erdene remains in position until then). Which means it might be better to wait until then. Masem (t) 12:12, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would argue that the resignation itself is still notable here, especially given the protests. Abcmaxx (talk) 13:19, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There's no reason that once the successor is named we caanot include the reason for his resignation in the blurb. Like the alt blurb would then become "... succeeded by so-and-so" Masem (t) 13:50, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support ITN/R. ArionStar (talk) 15:07, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is not ITNR, yet. There is no change, but in 30 days there will be. Masem (t) 17:01, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wait until a new PM is selected, then post succession. The Kip (contribs) 15:58, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wait per Masem & Kip. I expect a swift transition of power, so it shouldn't take long until a successor is known. TheRoyalOne06 (talk) 16:32, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support The protests and resignation are in the news now, and are a separate, independently newsworthy event from the hypothetical future ascendancy of the new prime minister. As a separate point, if Donald Trump or Keir Starmer announced they were going to step down in 30 days, I have absolutely no doubt that that would get its own blurb - and in fact, my recollection is that when western leaders like Trudeau resigned, that was indeed blurbed separately. FlipandFlopped 20:37, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
When Justin Trudeau resigned as the Prime Minister of Canada, his replacement, Mark Carney, became Prime Minister within hours. And that was ITN. Months earlier however, Justin Trudeau announced his intention to resign as both the Prime Minister of Canada, and the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. And I believe we did post it - despite nothing legally stopping Justin Trudeau from retracting his promise to resign (Which Pierre Trudeau did when he announced that he would resign from the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada). A question however - as this is not clear in the source. Has Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene actually resigned? Or is he just promising to resign. Is the promise retractable? Could another party (a president) reject the resignation, etc. Our sources and article are not clear on this. Nfitz (talk) 02:36, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - it makes no sense to oppose/wait this based on there being a "swift transition of power" and support the above nomination for its collapse. If/when there is a new PM elected, this blurb can easily be pulled and replaced, or just updated, to reflect the ITN/R that the new PM would be. -bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez | me | talk to me! 22:36, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - Important. No need to wait for the replacement, the appointment of the new prime minister will be another news item.Wi1-ch (talk) 08:59, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, honestly more interesting and significant than the upcoming ITN/R fact of there being a new PM. Article is surprisingly good. Toadspike [Talk] 21:45, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support - resignation of a PM with major protests such as this is a major event in and of itself, regardless of the impending de jure change in power Jone425 (talk) 04:58, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The nominated event is listed on WP:ITN/R, so each occurrence is presumed to be important enough to post. Comments should focus on whether the quality of the article and update meet WP:ITNCRIT, not the significance.

Nominator's comments: Exit polls are just released from South Korean broadcasters. However, for validity of the blurb, we should wait the official result from NEC to determined the winner of South Korean presidential election. Anyways, we may already know who is the next South Korean President replacing Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court of Korea on 4 April. 103.111.102.118 (talk) 11:57, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support The article is in good state. Altblurb sounds more fluent to me. Ca talk to me! 12:10, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support once ready The winner is now more or less clear, and it really seems like Lee Jae-myung could head towards a majority (the second time in Korean history this would happen). Post once votes are at least 90% counted to decide which blurb (I added altblurb2 for the majority event). Noticeable geopolitical implications resulting from the election, so definitely ITN-worthy. TheRoyalOne06 (talk) 15:09, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Our page says that 93% of the vote is counted. Nfitz (talk) 17:39, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I modified the altblurb2 to note that it is a plurality, which is technically only the largest share of the vote yet determines the winner in a first-past-the-post voting system (not 50%> as with a regular majority). Mr. Lechkar (talk) 19:20, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support I support the inclusion of this fact, regardless of the wording.. Direct700 (talk) 17:42, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support Kim has conceded, BBC has called it. Change of head of state is ITN/R, as are national elections. Up she goes. This post was made by orbitalbuzzsaw gang (talk) 18:25, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support. Change in head of state. Other than the current election tag, which means it is being rapidly edited, it has no citation needed tags and other inline tags. Kaito-san (talk/contribs) 18:33, 3 June 2025 (UTC) Support Support altblurb 1. The "purality" sentence adds very little - especially with the winner getting over 49% of the vote! Nfitz (talk) 19:52, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support altblurb 1 as ITN/R (change in head of state). There were actually 3 {{cn}} tags in the exit poll section, but I cited those. Otherwise, quality-wise it is almost good to go (except for maybe the fact that this is still developing). — 3PPYB6 (T / C / L)21:35, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It’s only not being updated further because of its length, the editor who was doing it has instead moved to updating the timeline article. Kowal2701 (talk) 07:20, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Add it back - put the timeline in parenthesis next to the war. JaxsonR (talk) 09:00, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, I support adding it back with the timeline Kowal2701 (talk) 18:05, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose removal per above. Timeline of the M23 campaign (2025) is where the updates are now happening, which mirrors other entries in ITN. Schwede66 please reinstate with the timeline link added. Removal was way too premature after just four hours of discussion and editors are still working hard on this ongoing conflict. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 07:28, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Should the timeline page therefore be the page which is linked from ITN? --MtPenguinMonster (talk) 08:09, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That would have to be nominated as an addition, but we don’t let timelines act as a proxy for the main article. We’re an encyclopaedia here to summarise content. Stephen 08:21, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Pinging @EdwinAlden.1995: Kowal2701 (talk) 09:02, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Both the Ukraine war and the Sudan war have timelines for exactly the reasons why one appears to be needed for M23, so the timeline shouldn't be the main linked article, but it should appear in parentheses after the main article. Failing that, we should just merge the timeline back into the main article because the "too long" template is only a yellow-rated one and not a showstopper for ITN. It's crazy that an ongoing conflict which actually has someone actually working hard on it and regularly updating has been axed in this fashion.  — Amakuru (talk) 08:26, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I hear you, Amakuru. Given the debate below, with some editors supporting your view and other supporting the removal, we should see how that pans out. I'd be happy to see this reinstated, with a timeline link added, if that is where consensus lands. And yes, I should have let the initial debate go on for a bit longer — apologies for that. Schwede66 22:40, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support removal if only one editor is updating articles about this conflict, is it really In The News? The section isn't called "ongoing wars". 217.180.228.155 (talk) 14:00, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It should be tbh, but major conflicts Kowal2701 (talk) 14:45, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What does the number of editors working on the article have to do with anything? The requirement says it should be regularly "updated", and impressively, this one is. It was delisted on the assumption that it's not being updated, yet it actually is, just that the contributor has followed instructions on the talk page to avoid making it too long. This conflict is every bit as major and ongoing as others, just that because of WP:SYSTEMICBIAS, you don't hear about it as much in the western mainstream media.  — Amakuru (talk) 16:42, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but it does matter. You are just saying WP:SYSTEMICBIAS to claim that this is "as major" as the war in Ukraine, and not presenting actual evidence. If you read either the main article or the new "timeline", it is one editor adding excessive amounts of mind-numbing detail, without any sense for the importance or relevance of that material to the conflict. To take a random example: Between 8–9 March, Goma experienced a surge in violence that left three dead. The first incident occurred in Katindo, where M23 rebels attacked a group playing cards, fatally shooting a young man as he attempted to flee.[413] In Majengo, Jackson Kilimandjaro Mutondwe, son of former deputy Valérien Nzanzu Kenda Kenda, was killed at home by unknown assailants. The third victim was found lifeless on Mutakato Avenue in Mabanga Sud.[413] According to Actualite.cd, at least 53 violent deaths were recorded in Goma and Nyiragongo throughout February 2025. One could also construct a similarly-detailed article on violence in Los Angeles County; we don't because it's not good encyclopedia content. If this is truly "in the news", it would be possible to write at a higher level of abstraction than this, or someone else would be motivated to update the article. 217.180.228.155 (talk) 02:23, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose removal per Amakuru. Do articles need to break policy to be at ITN now?? — EF5 17:42, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose removal per Amakuru. I do think it would be wise for the target article to change upon relisting to Timeline of the M23 campaign (2025). FlipandFlopped 19:25, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support removal as this conflict is not really "in the news" anymore, sadly - in contrast to the Gaza, Ukraine or Sudan conflicts. Why keep this instead of the myriad of other civil wars, e.g. the Myanmar civil war? Khuft (talk) 19:35, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It’s more of a proxy war than a civil war. The Myanmar civil war certainly deserves ongoing status, as does the War in the Sahel, but unfortunately they’re not getting updated enough. Ik ongoing is for more than conflicts but putting anything else alongside them seems tasteless as implicating equivalence of importance Kowal2701 (talk) 22:48, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly people on the War in the Sahel page cant tell the difference between Boko Haram insurgency and the War in the Sahel. JaxsonR (talk) 23:04, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also ISIS insurgency in Puntland could be added JaxsonR (talk) 23:06, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Any additions would have to be nominated. Stephen 23:42, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Kowal2701: IIRC we typically put the Olympics in ongoing for the duration of the Games, but that's about it. QuicoleJR (talk) 17:54, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Lol that’s the only one I could come up w myself. I would nominate War against the Islamic State but the article’s shoddy Kowal2701 (talk) 17:58, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Covid was in Ongoing for a long time, of course, but apart from that and the Olympics, few events stay "in the news" for a longer period of time, except wars. To your points: from my perspective, being regularly updated isn't enough - it also needs to be "in the news" on a relatively frequent basis, and for me, the M23 campaign is not. "Ongoing" can't just be a litany of all the world's conflicts, even if all those pages were updated daily. Khuft (talk) 21:25, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
From the last month: Al Jazeera, Euronews, France24, BBC, Times of India, the BBC's Swahili version has loads, and there's lots more less reputable ones and those in French. I think the "regularly updated" bit covers "in the news" since it needs recent sources? Kowal2701 (talk) 21:34, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support removal Unfortunately, we cannot list every war in Ongoing, and M23 doesn't get as much attention as the other ones. Look at list of ongoing armed conflicts, we can't list them all. QuicoleJR (talk) 22:00, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's comments: It is notable, but it might be too regional. Still it has implications bigger than banglam as a legal Islamist party in light of Syria in the last 6 months and the general rise of legal Islamism that was once banned for violence. • Comment Is there any other sources other than Gulf or South Asian media outlets? On that point, the references should include some indication of the location of the source. It would be nice to have some wider perspective. Eg., which "Daily Star"? There are hundreds. On the surface this sounds significant, and even concerning. But when you did into the target article, the party previously had status for much of the nation's history, so not ground breaking (from a very shallow examination). Recent deaths of any person, animal or organism with a Wikipedia article are always presumed to be important enough to post (see this RFC and further discussion). Comments should focus on whether the quality of the article meets WP:ITNRD.

Nominator's comments: Most known as the voice of John Redcorn on King of the Hill, fatally shot on June 1. The sources reporting on his death aren't the best outlets so we may or may not want to wait for more reporting.  Vanilla  Wizard 💙 15:54, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose as of my last check, this had 1,036 characters of prose, with 1,500 the limit for a stub. As per the short length, it jumps from a lengthy lead (presumably the page as it was before) and then another section for the death. I'm sure there will be more sources on his life and career, given the interest that many outlets have in Native American representation in the media. Unknown Temptation (talk) 16:43, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Changing my vote to Support. Article surpasses 1,500 characters and has a clear structure. Not a GA quality, but that's not what we're asking for. Unknown Temptation (talk) 20:37, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reluctant oppose Especially because the horrifically homophobic, hateful nature of his death is so tragic, I hate to oppose the article simply because the filmography section is unreferenced. With this being said, policy unfortunately dictates that this section should not be removed, and should instead be entirely cited with a corresponding reference for every film, television episode, and video game he was in. FlipandFlopped 00:41, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Flipandflopped: With this being said, policy unfortunately dictates that this section should not be removed, and should instead be entirely cited with a corresponding reference for every film, television episode, and video game he was in. This is not necessarily so, and likely an overly strict interpretation of a single policy, as WP:GENREF allows for a single source to cite a large batch of material when its entries or claims are grouped in the same source. It's common for charts, lists, tables, etc. Left guide (talk) 04:53, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct - it is absolutely ok for one reliable source that lists the appearances in a large batch to be used. But at a minimum, every entry on the chart needs to have a reference (whether it be individualized or the batch source). There are missing citations for many of the appearances. FlipandFlopped 14:32, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support for the reasons @Unknown Temptation listed above, it's been more covered than a lot of RDs especially given the circumstances. Not mentioning it due to mediocre article quality is quite frankly insane. TheFellaVB (talk) 03:28, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Article: 2025 Polish presidential election (talk · history · tag)
Blurb:  In Polish presidential election, Karol Nawrocki (pictured) wins the second round of the election. (Post)
Alternative blurb: Karol Nawrocki (pictured) is elected as president of Poland.
Alternative blurb II: Karol Nawrocki (pictured) is elected as president of Poland, defeating Rafał Trzaskowski in the closest election in Polish history.
News source(s): Notes from Poland, Poland Elects, BBC News

Nominator's comments: Early release of the exit poll showing the result were too close to call. However, as the counting continues, it become clear who is elected as the President of Poland, given that the current vote count is 76%. I'm also not sure if this is ITNR or not, so anyone feel free for updating the blurb. 103.111.102.118 (talk) 23:33, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support per ITNR, once result is clear, it will probably Nawrocki at this point in time. History6042😊 (Contact me) 01:54, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Support once article is updated with result. Significant per ITN/R. --MtPenguinMonster (talk) 03:43, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Except in Poland the President has veto power over legislation, and Prime Minister Tusk doesn’t have a required supermajority of 60% to override a veto. Here’s the BBC source on that fact. The Polish Presidency is a bit more than ceremonial, and add the surprising nature of Nawrocki’s close victory, the impact this will have on EU and NATO, and the headline coverage the election has worldwide, and you have a no-brainer ITN blurb, ITN/R or not… in my view. Jusdafax (talk) 09:05, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't oppose this nomination, just noted that it's not ITN/R.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 09:35, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Jusdafax (talk) 09:42, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Poland is a semi-presidential republic, where executive power is shared between the prime minister and the president. So this is definitely ITN/R. — Kpalion(talk) 12:49, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WP:ITNR links to List of current heads of state and government where only the prime minister of Poland is coloured in green, which indicates that the leader constitutionally administers the executive of their respective state/government. If you think there's a mistake and you have evidence to support it, you're encouraged to correct the list. This cannot be considered ITN/R until the list is corrected or another article that states otherwise is linked from WP:ITN/R.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 14:40, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There should be a big "citation needed" tag on the whole color coding in that list. The president of France is a de facto executive leader whose office lacks de jure constitutional power? What kind of drivel is this? — Kpalion(talk) 15:49, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Then, you should propose to change the wording on WP:ITNR and remove the link to that list. Anyway, this isn’t procedurally an ITN/R item until that happens.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 15:55, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Although Poland is a semi-presidential republic, it is not comparable to the French system and would be considered a "weak" semi-presidential model. In France, the model is more strong and dualistic, and, to make a notable difference, while the French president presides over the government during periods of cohabitation, the Polish president cannot do so. Frankly, I don't consider it to be ITNR. _-_Alsor (talk) 16:49, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The president of Poland may preside over cabinet meetings as well. It only happens on rare occasions, but still. — Kpalion(talk) 22:34, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Does not matter whether it is ITN/R or not, but this presidential election result may have a significant impact either in Poland, European Union, or internationally (IMO it is more qualified as ITNR than regular ITN). In meantime, we can expect a more significant deadlock between the President from PiS and Donald Tusk's government from the opposiite party (Civic Platform) than we seen currently, especially regarding controversial laws related to the EU. Remember, the President can veto any legislation that didn't appease him/his party. Regarding the blurb, i'm nominate Altblurb to be posted. 2404:8000:1037:587:E085:E954:9F16:91E7 (talk) 09:31, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per above. Might be a sobering result to Brussels, and the tight race in addition makes it highly worthy of posting. Added Altblurb2 to give a bit more information. Might also suggest the picture in the thumbnail
    Alternative picture
as an alternative picture. Looks more neutral and cleaner, making it visually more appealing in my eyes. TheRoyalOne06 (talk) 16:32, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support it can be confusing just how political each president in Europe is, but I believe this is a major event, if we see sources. They are mentioning how the president is of a different party to the prime minister and government, and can veto the more liberal and pro-EU policies of the latter. BBC: "As Poland's new president, Nawrocki is likely to continue to use his presidential power of veto to block Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-EU programme". [6] Al Jazeera: "Nawrocki has been deeply critical of the Tusk administration. The president has the ability to veto legislation and influence military and foreign policy decisions." [7] To use one example, the president of Ireland wouldn't be able to do that. [8] Unknown Temptation (talk) 16:39, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support irrespective of ITNR status. The coverage it's getting in international news is testimony to that. It also already had an additional impact on Poland itself, with PM Tusk announcing a vote of confidence in the parliament. Article looks very complete now. Would prefer atlblurb1 for brevity. Khuft (talk) 20:51, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
comment it's ITNR so it is obvous when updated, just to mention one may consider adding the pm calling for a vote of no-confidence following the result (instability is the most notable factor).Sportsnut24 (talk) 21:26, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Important and major event for multiple reasons: his victory, supported by Trump, has been described as another signal of growing support for right-wing governments in the E.U.; his presidency, due to Poland's significant military role on NATO's Eastern Flank and his role as commander in chief of the Polish Armed Forces, will have a direct impact on the fraught geopolitical situation in the region, possibly as a continuation of Duda's policies, though his stance on Ukraine is markedly different and he is openly opposed to Ukraine joining NATO; in terms of Polish politics, Nawrocki's narrow but decisive victory is already perceived as a looming threat for the current governing coalition going into 2027. Per Exemplum 22:04, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Obviously. ArionStar (talk) 23:14, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support altblurb for brevity; the other two choices have redundant and/or excess details. Left guide (talk) 23:25, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support ITNR or not isn't really relevant, but the election results have significant impact domestically and internationally, especially regarding incredibly razor-thin gap between two candidates (prefer Altblurb 2). This week, we will have two election results related to head of state (another one is South Korea that obviously ITNR when election result published), so it would be better if the blurb was posted now rather than later, which will rather supressed by South Korean one. 114.4.78.174 (talk) 00:00, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Blurb: Ukraine claims to have hit ~34% of Russia's strategic bomber fleet in an FPV drone attack. (Post)
News source(s): https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1ld7ppre9vo
Credits:
Nominator's comments: The strategic bomber fleet of a superpower like the old Soviet Union was part of the nuclear triad, and Ukraine likely just destroyed/disabled 1/3 of this triad leg. These bombers are expensive (I have seen the damage for this attack estimated at $7 billion), Russia will struggle to replace them. I have seen the (not unreasonable) claim that this surprise attack did Pearl Harbor level damage to Russia's airforce. And it was done by 100+ FPV drones, remote controlled and likely costing less than $10'000 each, hitting 1'000s of km from Ukraine. This unprecedented attack is going into the history books of warfare. Thue (talk) 08:50, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, already covered by ongoing ITN. We also don't blurb claims like this per WP:NPOV. 83.187.182.13 (talk) 09:27, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Don't forget Sinking of the Moskva (link), 2023 Wagner Group plane crash (link). Dreykop (talk) 00:07, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per 83.187.182.13. There's a fair few attacks going on in the Russia-Ukraine war right now, and this one doesn't seem to be particularly standout in long-term significance. Covered by ongoing.  — Amakuru (talk) 11:48, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Further to what I wrote above, this at time of writing the most read article on the FT, the top story on CNN, and is already in ITN on de.wp, cs.wp. It Is Me Here (talk) 13:16, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support This seems strategically significant in showing the power of cheap drones to strike over distances of thousands of miles. Hugely expensive manned aircraft like the B-21 and F-47 are looking increasingly like battleships in the 20th century -- too expensive and vulnerable. Andrew🐉(talk) 15:42, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Besides the concerns that this is covered by ongoing, it seems like the claim of 34% of the fleet destroyed is a Ukrainian claim and it has not been independently verified by outside sources. Natg 19 (talk) 17:48, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • While we don't know if it is exactly 34%, there is plenty of video online showing a lot of Russian bombers burning. So it is a significant number. Thue (talk) 18:16, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wait or oppose; this seems to have more prominence than the daily war reports, but the boldest Ukrainian claims are not verified yet by any other source. This doesn't seem to have impacted the ongoing peace talks. The verified claims aren't enough to justify a blurb in addition to the Ongoing. 217.180.228.155 (talk) 19:19, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support in principle - this will reverberate beyond the Russia-Ukraine war as countries from US to China will scramble to better protect their bomber fleets. Also: the Russian nuclear triad was impacted. Saying this is just standard, ongoing warfare is downplaying the significance of this. Oppose It's certainly significant, but I think ongoing is good enough. I'm not sure if it's even as significant as the recent accelerating Russian advanced through Ukraine. If that accelerates and it looks like Ukraine may fall, then I'd support. Nfitz (talk) 22:03, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Blurb: Paris Saint-Germain defeat Inter Milan 5–0 to win the final of the Champions League. (Post)
Alternative blurb: In association football, Paris Saint-Germain win the UEFA Champions League, defeating Inter Milan in the final (man of the match Désiré Doué pictured).
Alternative blurb II: In association football, Arsenal win the women's Champions League and Paris Saint-Germain win the men's Champions League.

The nominated event is listed on WP:ITN/R, so each occurrence is presumed to be important enough to post. Comments should focus on whether the quality of the article and update meet WP:ITNCRIT, not the significance.

  • Comment The article needs significant work before posting, a post-match section needs to be added while expansion is required for the route to the final and pre-match. The background section is also largely unsoured. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:32, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Article not ready Some section is lacking in content. Conditional strong support once article is ready.INeedSupport :3 21:32, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Always loves the fact Abcmaxx always WP:IDHT, adds the final score of the match, and some stupid trivia (if applicable) about the match instead of suggesting the usual boring blurb formula we use for such events. Howard the Duck (talk) 22:35, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is the score not relevant or what is your point? You're always free to add an altblurb, I've added the most standard blurb here possible. I would say 5–0 in a CL final is highly unusual. Theres no rule saying I have to propose a blurb to your liking, but thanks for the unconstructive criticism. Abcmaxx (talk) 07:12, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We have posted the UCL for a decade now without the score. You have not added "the most standard blurb here possible". Suggesting, as the nominator of a blurb that will never, ever be used lengthens discussion. I hope this puts to end your practice. Howard the Duck (talk) 12:23, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The women's final article requires significant expansion before posting. If someone's willing to do it then great, otherwise it shouldn't prevent the men's final from being posted, which is ITN/R. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:37, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Where would you say it needs to be expanded? @S.A. Julio: History6042😊 (Contact me) 18:43, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@History6042: There's no background, pre-match or post-match sections, at least some additional prose should be added before posting. The result was quite an upset, it would be nice if this were explained in the article. S.A. Julio (talk) 09:24, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean the women's is more important, how so. History6042😊 (Contact me) 01:47, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Using the fact that they have Make Arsenal Great Again I assume they are trolling because Arsenal won the women’s champions @ 2401:D002:F504:7200:4153:5BBD:7350:12DD (talk) 08:26, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support A change in the position of the co-prince of Andorra is rare, and this change roughly occurs every two to three decades. CastleFort1 (talk) 15:01, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This probably should not be ITNR, as the co-prince is not the position that administers the executive of the govt per our table. Masem (t) 15:07, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The 2 princes are heads of state (1278 treaty Bishop of Urgell and Count of Foix then Count of Foix became King of France 1589 so inherited by French Crown then French Presidency) Sagittarian Milky Way (talk) 15:47, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The underlying table List of current heads of state and government lists the PM as the one that wields executive power, neither either co-prince. Masem (t) 17:09, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Head of state is ITNR.Sportsnut24 (talk) 01:44, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
not always, not this case. _-_Alsor (talk) 10:29, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral The change in heads of state in systems where this figure does not have executive powers, such as the case of Andorra as the Co-Prince Episcopal refers to, is not ITNR. However, given that the last time such a succession occurred was 22 years ago and is not common (but ordinary), it might be ITN-interesting. _-_Alsor (talk) 17:07, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support change of head of state has precedent This post was made by orbitalbuzzsaw gang (talk) 18:33, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
