Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

Doesn't meet WP:NLIST, as it's just a list of non-notable people. Unnecessary WP:CFORK from main Samsunspor article, where all of the history section in this article could be merged instead (or a general article about the sports club rather than the football club created). Either way, this list is not needed. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:50, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable amature football club. Whilst it has it's own history it has not gathered any secondary coverage. -- D'n'B-📞 -- 05:25, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • They aren't mentioned at Riga#Sports as this is a team that existed for one season during the German occupation of Latvia. They are however mentioned at the season article. Normally I would agree that season article redirects aren't great, but in this specific case it makes sense. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:25, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to Riga#Sports per Govvy. The league season is an okay target, but a club's history is generally more tied to its city than its league (particularly a league in which it only played a single season). The fact that They aren't mentioned at Riga#Sports is an easily WP:SURMOUNTABLE problem that can be addressed by adding a one-line mention at Riga#Sports under the "dissolved football clubs" heading. If you can make a good improvement on the article and add some of the sources you listed on the discussion on the article and develop the article maybe I can consider changing my comment, placing the source here without adding it on the article won’t help much. • Weak delete Being listed on the Vikings' website has zero bearing on notability (they have bios for a bunch of non-notable people-even their turf technicians). Best, GPL93 (talk) 15:06, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep. I think the sources found above put him just over the threshold. Wizardman 23:01, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Even discounting the Sun article, which doesn't say much, there are multiple articles about the subject from at least 4 different reliable sources (including the LA Times), which is plenty to meet GNG. While GPL93 is correct that the Vikings website has zero bearing, I am not counting that one. And Chippla360's insistence on including these sources in the article has no bearing on whether the article should be kept or not per GNG. That can be done after the article is kept, if it is. No, not the Massachusetts woman on trial for murder (although I will admit, searching for her lead me to this stub). This article is about an Australian former cricketer. Although criteria #1 of WP:NCRICKET is technically passed because she has played at the international level for a Test-playing nation, NSPORT is clear that there must always be independent WP:SIGCOV of the individual athlete. Neither player profiles on sports aggregation websites, nor an article from 1982 that talks about the entire Australian Cricket team, qualify. WP:BEFORE search did not yield any eligible coverage. • Comment: Given this article's high page views (41,193 at this writing) compared to other members of the 1982 Australian women's cricket team, I don't think it's a stretch that most of those views are looking for Death of John O'Keefe instead. Should this discussion lead to deletion, creating a redirect to that article at this title might be wise, but I offer no opinion on the current article and subject (which has been on Wikipedia for about a decade before the Massachusetts murder trial even began) or its notability and sourcing. WCQuidditch 05:35, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely, yes. I am quite certain that thousands of people have stumbled upon this article inadvertently. If this AfD is not successful, I will likely start a discussion on the article talk page proposing to move it to "Karen Read (cricketer)" and have the current title replaced by a redirect which leads to Death of John O'Keefe. FlipandFlopped 14:16, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment given that she played in a team that won the Women's Cricket World Cup, and was given an Order of Australia award for services to cricket, I would expect there will be more sources out there, once filtering through the ones about current person of same name. Because achievements like these tend to garner non-trivial coverage. Will have a look in the next few days on this. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:16, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's interesting that you say that, because intuitively, I would not think so. I don't see why reliable secondary sources would have indepth coverage about a person just because they were on a winning rugby team in 1982 - not just about the team, but about her specifically. The same goes for the Order of Australia, as nearly 50,000 people have received it (and I highly doubt that all 50,000 of them have WP:SIGCOV). With this being said, I will gladly withdraw the nomination if someone can produce two examples of significant independent coverage. FlipandFlopped 14:12, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Reliable sources: "Captain of Western Australia's only winning Australian Championship team"
    • Flipandflopped: She was just "on" the team
It's pretty usual for the captain of a championship team to get interviewed and profiled in the sports news, because the captain isn't just some random player. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:36, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. In addition to what Joseph2302 has noted above, she is in the Western Australian cricket Gallery of Greats and the Karen Read Medal is awarded each year to the best A Grade player in the state. I would be utterly astounded if SIGCOV of her does not exist. But unfortunately most digitised Australian newspaper archives are very spotty between around the mid-1950s and early 1990s, and I haven't been able to find anything in any of the databases I have access to. Hoping someone else has better luck, otherwise regretfully redirect to List of Australia women Test cricketers. MCE89 (talk) 12:18, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, no move Sources have been added to the article, and it's once again time to remind everyone that though this is the English-language Wikipedia and the servers are hosted in Florida, that doesn't mean American subjects gain primacy in article naming. The MA woman may be getting more attention now, but she has no article, and the hatnote is fulfilling the purpose as it does, and there should be no change at all and I would oppose any rename for this article just because 'MA Karen currently gets more attention'. In three years, she will likely be forgotten as most overcovered trial subjects in the States are once true crime media finds another woman's case to track. Nathannah📮 16:14, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nathannah, what two independent secondary sources that were added to the article pass WP:SIGCOV? There is:
    • "Player Profile: Karen Read". ESPNcricinfo. Retrieved 26 January 2023. - Just a summary of her stats, exists for every cricket athlete ever. Clearly not WP:SIGCOV.
    • "Player Profile: Karen Read". CricketArchive. Retrieved 26 January 2023. - Per above.
    • "Cricket Australia congratulates 2025 Australia Day Honours recipients". Cricket Australia. 27 January 2025. Retrieved 16 June 2025 - Not independent of the subject, fails both WP:SIGCOV and WP:BIO. Even if it was independent of the subject, it is a passing mention that she won an award. There is no indepth or substantive coverage of Read.
    • "Australian women win final". The Sydney Morning Herald. Fairfax Media. 8 February 1982. Retrieved 25 April 2014 - Does not significantly discuss Read as an individual besides mentioning once that she scored in a game, fails WP:SIGCOV.
    • "Karen Read Medal". Western Australian Cricket Association. Retrieved 16 June 2025 - A list of people who have won her medal. Does not significantly discuss Read as an individual beyond a single sentence. It is also not independent of the subject. It fails WP:NBIO and WP:SIGCOV.
    • "WACA Honorary Life Members". Western Australian Cricket Association. Retrieved 16 June 2025 - A list of people that she is on, does not discuss her and does not pass WP:SIGCOV.
    • "Karen Read". Western Australian Secondary School Executives Association. Retrieved 16 June 2025 - Not independent of the subject, not WP:SIGCOV and fails WP:BIO.
    • "Dr Karen Ann READ". Australian Honours Search Facility. Retrieved 25 January 2025 - Primary sources which contains no significant coverage; it is her C.V. posted on a government website.
Respectfully, all of the above objectively fail WP:SIGCOV, and you would know that if you had read the article or even bothered to open them. Even the user who added them to the article, Joseph, acknowledged they were insufficient to pass WP:GNG as-is. I understand you resent the implication that the other Karen Read is a more notable subject, but this is WP:NOTAFORUM and I would ask you focus future contributions on whether *this article* passes WP:GNG. FlipandFlopped 16:44, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per added sources and WP:HEY. The article has doubled in size, and the number of cited sources has doubled, since the nomination was made. Someone with access to the Trove might be able to find even more. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:31, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just noting that I’ve checked Trove and unfortunately it doesn’t help in this case. For copyright reasons, Trove generally only contains newspapers up to 1954. The only major newspaper for which Trove covers the relevant period is The Canberra Times, where she appears in about half a dozen match reports but doesn’t get any SIGCOV. The best bet for finding SIGCOV would probably be the archives of The West Australian, but as far as I can tell only their pre-1954 and post-1995 articles have been digitised. MCE89 (talk) 07:15, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WhatamIdoing Again, I would just like to politely ask which two sources, specifically, pass WP:SIGCOV or WP:NBIO. "The article has doubled" is not a policy-based rationale with regards to whether the subject matter is notable. I really hope whoever reviews this can sympathize with my frustration... none of these !votes are addressing the question of notability... "Does the subject pass WP:GNG"? FlipandFlopped 13:50, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Flipandflopped, I would just like to politely ask that you read Wikipedia:Don't bludgeon the process and then stop arguing with every editor who doesn't !vote your way. Four editors have expressed an opinion about whether to keep, delete, or redirect this article, and you have argued with three of us so far. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:33, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unnecessary WP:CFORK from main Samsunspor article, where all of the history section in this article could be merged instead (or a general article about the sports club rather than the football club created). Biography of a footballer, not properly sourced as passing WP:NSPORT. As always, footballers are not automatically entitled to have Wikipedia articles just because they existed, and have to be shown to achieve certain notability benchmarks supported by WP:GNG-worthy third-party reliable source coverage about their careers -- but this literally just states that he existed without saying anything about his career above and beyond the simple fact of existing, and is referenced to two unreliable source directory entries that aren't support for notability and a brief mention of his name in a book on the overall "official history" of one team he played for, which isn't enough to get him over GNG all by itself.
As I don't have access to archived British media coverage from the 1930s, I'd be happy to withdraw this if somebody who does have such access can find better sourcing with which to say more about him than just "he was a player who existed, the end", but simple existence isn't "inherently" notable enough to exempt him from needing better referencing than this. • Comment The article is only three days old, did you not consider asking the creator to improve the article first? I did struggle to find sources, I found his name on an old archive score card here, but from whats written on vintagefootballers.com there could be some stuff to look up. He was then called up to WW2, so he might also have information on him from that time. I'd have to say, just because you can't find stuff on the internet doesn't mean there isn't offline resources like the old newspapers. I wouldn't call this an open and shut case. Govvy (talk) 18:41, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete for the reasons stated by the nominator and lack of anything I can find independently from my own searching. The argument put forward that the article is only three days old so should be kept is illogical. It should have been researched properly before being published. As for "he was in WW2 so there must be coverage", that's nonsense too as millions of people were involved in WW2 without getting any media coverage for their efforts. Finally you can't just say "there must be offline coverage", you have to prove it or at least show it is more likely then not and even then offline coverage still needs to meet the SIGCOV threshold, not just be brief mentions in a match report or a line about a transfer to a new club. Anxioustoavoid (talk) 20:57, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reply @Anxioustoavoid: You should read what I wrote again, because one, I never said the article should be kept, two I said there maybe possible coverage of his time in WW2, and three, there will be offline coverage of him, maybe you need to also read what you wrote!! Not that I owe you an explanation but here it is. I asked for my previous account to be closed after getting really mad one day over an issue with a user who was clearly using multiple accounts and IP addresses to continually incorrectly change a group of boxers nationalities and no-one would intervene to stop this. I lost my head so to speak and quit, then decided to come back with this account a few weeks later. Never had an account before then. Going to attack the editor because you can't attack my argument I presume? Another thing which factored into my quitting Wikipedia previously. My username refers to me being anxious to avoid all the pettiness on Wikipedia but it seems I have become embroiled in it for a second time. Partly my fault for engaging with you I accept but there we go. I will not be engaging further with you so say/do what you like. As you will see from my edit history - which since you went to the effort of tracking down my previous account I'm sure you have already looked at - I'm not exactly prolific on here so if it makes you happy to seek to have me banned then go right ahead. I won't fight it and you can get a warm feeling inside. Anxioustoavoid (talk) 10:23, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is no source with in-depth coverage, but as I said above, it is possible to redirect to the player stats section, since he is one of the players who scored the most goals. For Tuvaluan footballers, a list of athletes who served the national team seems more appropriate to me. Svartner (talk) 23:20, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Fails GNG and SIGCOV. The existing references are either brief mentions in match reports, non-independent as they are from the Tuvalu FA or are brief transfer reports about him joining a Dutch Sunday League team which is hardly a notable thing as there are many thousands of Sunday League footballers who do not warrant an article on Wikipedia. I can't find anything substantial on him independently either. I also suggest something is done to stop this being recreated as it has already been through AFD twice and deleted only to be recreated and brought back to AFD. Anxioustoavoid (talk) 22:14, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The Dutch sources literally say he is the best Tuvaluan footballer and all-time top scorer of national team. Again, this is about context and he was clearly one of Tuvalu's pre-eminent athletes who even received foreign coverage. Defnitely a signifcant figure in Tuvalu overall. Non notable kickboxer. This article initially appears notable but when you look deeper it doesn't meet WP:NKICKRed XN, WP:SPORTBASICRed XN, WP:GNGRed XN. It also has a lot of promotional aspects such as: the name of his private non-notable company, the name of his children: "They have three children together: Sidney, Saryna, and Sterling", the entire sections "Early life", "Corporate career", "Personal life", passage like "conditioned and rehabilitated himself through hot yoga"??? and majority of the "championships" entries are completely unsourced, potential COI? The article screams vanity page to promote the subject's business interests and self-published non-notable books. This article is as promotional as it gets.

The subject's wins in WKA, WKU or WAKO are in amateur kickboxing (Point Fighting or light contact Kick Boxing) which doesn't pass WP:NKICK. The subject hasn't fought outside of these amateur competitions, and hasn't fought professional kickboxing (unlike Dragan Jovanović for example who went on to fight Pro kick). According to WP:NKICK: Kickboxers who have an amateur background exclusively are not notable under this guideline unless they have been the subject examined in detail (more than a single paragraph) in several reliable third-party sources (at least four), excluding local publications. The subject has only been covered in some local minor publications such as the subject's home city of Ottawa: inside ottawa valley.com. Which is even filled with a total of 20+ mistakes. Lekkha Moun (talk) 19:44, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment NKICK seems a tad strict. It wants "at least four" pieces of SIGCOV, excluding local? That's a higher bar than GNG.
~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:46, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you have an issue with NKICK you are welcome to start a conversion about it, but in the meantime we have to base our decision to the agreed current guidelines. The subject is an amateur kickboxer and the guidelines for amateur kickboxing athletes are extremely appropriate, because it should require a lot in order to be notable as an amateur. There are so many non-notable martial arts competitions out there where you can become a "world champion" with only a few participants per category, that's why quality SIGCOV has been requested. Fails WP:SPORTSPERSON and GNG. No significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Article consists of only a few sentences, with minimal content and poor sourcing. Subject appears not to meet the notability criteria for sports figures. InvisibleUser909 (talk) 22:59, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:NLIST and WP:GNG. We don't keep lists like this. Readers who may be interested in previous players can see historic players at List of Sharks (rugby union) players, transfer lists for URC and Super Rugby competitions and season pages. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 13:04, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not opposed to merging this with the List of Sharks (rugby union) players, subject to resolution of the distinction of Currie Cup vs URC players, as if those players - who meet notability requirements - are excluded then List of Sharks (rugby union) players is incomplete. Whybeetoo (talk) 11:04, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This would be dependent on the outcome of the discussion on the WikiProject. I'd be opposed to full squad boxes but if we can find information on Currie Cup players (which I found incredibly difficult in creating this list) then can be added in another section if consensus reached. I am unable to find sufficient coverage of this event to warrant a standalone article. PROD was contested in favor of a redirect or merge to New England Rugby Football Union. JTtheOG (talk) 19:35, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kvng: Not at all. I would just rather allow time for sourcing to be found than boldly merge/redirecting. The chances here seem slim, but you'd be surprised at the coverage that can be dug up in these situations. JTtheOG (talk) 22:16, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Almost all of the players in this list are not notable. Louis (talk) (contribs) 15:01, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is false. They are notable in so far as they record who played for a major club side, some of which end up playing for other teams. If that information is not recorded then it is lost, making it impossible to track player development and also maintain the history of a significant rugby club. For me this is like removing films from a director's filmography because they are not critically acclaimed. Whybeetoo (talk) 18:30, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:RU/N they are not notable. "Youth players are not notable unless they satisfy one of the statements above, or if they can be shown to meet the wider requirements of WP:GNG." See Wikipedia:WikiProject Rugby union/Notability#Biographies. Louis (talk) (contribs) 20:10, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But these are not Biographies? And so that section doesnt apply. This is a page that allows the tracking of player development over an extended period, allowing a reader to understand the health of a junior system. Its not a list of biographies. Secondly these are not youth players, these are professionally contracted rugby players, all above the age of 18. Whybeetoo (talk) 21:00, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, WP:SIGCOV. A google search of "Sharks Junior Squad" reveals minimal results with all those relating to this topic being from primary sources. A new catogary would be better suited for this ie: Category:Sharks (rugby union) junior players (or similar) for any players that pass GNG of WP:RU/N Louis (talk) (contribs) 22:07, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you google the component teams of the Junior Squad you get substantial mentions from multiple sources. This includes multiple independently sourced press coverage. Sharks u21, u20, u19 etc. The Junior Squad is just a catch all term for players contracted but eligible for these teams. The mentions are not trivial or in passing, they are articles specifically written about these teams and often these players. Whybeetoo (talk) 22:43, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete This is mostly fancruft which fails WP:GNG and WP:NLIST. The sourcing present is just team announcements for junior rugby competitions. Perhaps a small separate section on Sharks (Currie Cup) could be added to mention the U21 side and players representing their county at U20 level but this is complete overkill. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 13:07, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please detail how it fails WP:GNG and WP:NLIST so your claim can be evaluated. Not all Wikipedia content requires individual notability if the topic itself has informative or encyclopedic value. Squad tracking serves a research and documentation role akin to sports archives or player pathway databases. Whybeetoo (talk) 09:07, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fails WP:GNG as there is no sustained coverage of the sides and the players that partake. Fails WP:NLIST as it's not discussed in reliable sourcing similar to GNG. If Wikipedia was a sports oracle of SA Rugby oracle then could perhaps be included, but this is just fancruft for me with no encyclopedic value. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 09:51, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Don’t think this is a particularly notable doubles pairing. Way below the bar that this wikiproject uses to start creating such articles. They only played together for not even four full seasons and didn’t even reach one grand slam final together. There are plenty of teams who one WTA 1000 title together, that’s not something extraordinary. Tvx1 16:24, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

To be fair, this article started as a draft, it was reviewed by an editor and approved to be published as an article, then other editors from the tennis wiki saw it, helped to improve it and did not find anything wrong with it Haddad Maia fan (talk) Haddad Maia fan (talk) 16:30, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Draft reviewers only tend to check whether it technically complies with the site’s requirements (prose quality and style, sourcing,…). They don’t judge whether the subject merits an article. Tvx1 17:09, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
