User deletion of warns

If a user deletes a warn they were given from their talk page (whether the warn was valid or invalid), what would be the course of action to take? Fanfanboy (talk) 02:12, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Nothing. It is their user page: the point was to warn them, and they've presumably seen it. Others can also still see it in the history pretty trivially, so chronic issues usually won't be overlooked. Remsense留 02:18, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

@Fanfanboy: Warnings may be removed. There are a few things that can't be deleted from the user talk page, such as declined unblock requests. See WP:REMOVE RudolfRed (talk) 02:25, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Fanfanboy, removal of a user talk page warning is construed as evidence that the editor read and understood the warning. The removal provides no protection at all to that editor. When to go to RSN

Is it appropriate to open an RSN discussion to assess the reliability of sources currently being cited in an AfD discussion? And should I ping the people involved in the AfD discussion? Or should the reliability of the sources be discussed at the AfD and an RSN discussion can be opened at a later date if necessary? TipsyElephant (talk) 16:33, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

@Flux55: Hello! It appears that you are trying to write the article backwards, i.e. first you came up with the subject, created a draft, and then started thinking about the sources. In short, you should have first found enough sources and then created draft, etc. I mean it's not a wrong approach to write an article backwards but it's way harder than doing it forwards: experienced editors would say at least 20 times as hard (from the text I linked). @Eric-Dieter, you appear to have written a draft on your user page, User:Eric-Dieter.

1) It has not been submitted for review. It would likely be declined if you did submit it, since the formatting of your references is essentially broken, and there are some serious issues with tone.

2) Your user page is place for information about yourself as a Wikipedia editor, not a place to draft articles. Ideally you should be working at Draft:Art Venegas, or at least in your sandbox, where you've already created a sample page - User:Eric-Dieter/Sample page.

I've made some tweaks to improve readability and bring the draft further in line with our style guidelines. Beside the problems I mentioned above, I see information which is not tied to any reference, particularly in the personal life section, plus many formatting problems. @Eric-Dieter, I recommend you try using the Visual Editor here on Wikipedia to get the draft looking the way you've envisioned, and that you remove any family details in the draft which you do not have a reliable source for. 57.140.16.1 (talk) 22:42, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Images license

I would like to upload some images from the https://fkzeljeznicar.ba/ website, both past and future ones, on to Wikimedia Commons. Not too long ago, I emailed the club's PR team and asked them if it was okay with them to freely use the images. They responded and said that it was totaly fine. However, when I approached the Help desk, all of the moderators here told me that a written permission was not enough and that the owners (in this case the PR team) had to have a license published on the website saying all the images are free to redistribute. Recently, I thought of reaching out to them again and asking if they would like to do that in order for the images to be freely used. Now I am just wondering, is it enough for the license to be placed, for example, at the bottom of the website, and if so, what specific license would be the best to put up which would guarantee for the images to be 100% free to used and to upload on to Wikimedia Commons? Bakir123, I think the best choice of licence for Commons would be probably be CC BY-SA 4.0. But they should be aware that once they publish their images that way, anyone is allowed to reuse them, not just Commons or Wikipedia, and they won't be able to go back on it. See User contributions for... in more summary form

In my watchlist, I have multiple changes (in a day) wrapped into a single line in the list. e.g.:
16:39 Scotland‎‎ (14 changes | history)...
This makes the list much more compact and usable.
Is there something comparable for my User contributions? Exactly the same functionality would not really work, but wrapping up all the edits for, say, the last month in a single line would be useful. Then I could go back and look for editing that, in the light of further reading, now seems incomplete – or anything that needs further review after any initial burst of enthusiasm. (Yes, I have rewritten or even deleted some of my editing in the cold light of dawn!) If that [suggested] month were easily variable, that would be even better.

Or to put things another way, how can I remind myself of what I have been doing on Wikipedia in the recent past, so that I can check for anything that I have done that needs a bit more work?

The current question comes from doing some reading of a lengthy (5 volumes, approx. 9 inches of shelf space) and complex source that has relevance to a number of articles. Finding a balance between keeping reading and doing appropriate editing is a challenge – especially as the source has information somewhat dotted about and no adequate index. Dropping a {{uw-vand2}} on User talk:Jonharojjashi for mixing up two historical figures who shared a name wasn't really the best way to engage. The comment about the mixup could have stood on its own, without the warning template, and it's not terribly surprising they've responded in kind.

If you're concerned about the reputational damage of unreverted warning templates on your usertalk, just stay focused on the content of the Battle of Thane article and its deletion discussion. Can a person legally hold two wikipedia accounts in his name?

Real pictures of mutilated bodies from crime scenes? Needs removed.

I was shocked to see a mutilated corpse from actual crime scene photo on the "jack the ripper" page. I tried to remove this photo but was unable to do so. I was also unable to find any other way to change/delete.

Out of respect for the victims and there families, I think showing mutilated corpses is horrible. How would you like it if your relative had been murdered and her mutilated corpse photos were online? Disgusting. I also fear those individuals with psychotic personality disorders could derive inspiration/motivation from these types of photos.

Can someone please help me to remove the mutilated corpse photos? Thanks

XB9000, please be aware that Jack the Ripper is a Featured article and also a Vital article. It has gone through extensive peer review by highly experienced editors, and has been displayed on Wikipedia's main page. The consensus of the editors with a long term interest in this topic is that the photos of victims belong in the article. Images that are shocking to some people are commonplace on Wikipedia in articles about shocking topics, and that is simply not going to change. Cullen328 (talk) 21:20, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Martineau family

"Excessive citations" After reference 54 the editors say there are too many references (5 altogether). Can these all be put into one long (truncated) citation so that all 5 of them are only seen when the reader clicks on it - I have seen this done before. Also, can this truncating also been done with the 5 citations occurring before citation number 69? (the editor again says "excessive citations".)

It's possible to have 5 citations inside one set of <ref>...</ref> tags, but those 5 citations still may be excessive. I suggest talking with the editor who added the "excessive citations" tag first. GoingBatty (talk) 22:01, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Possible Plagiarism

I think that the header and overview section of Portuguese man o' war is plagiarism. The plagiarized source is this, which links to this. There are a few examples of very similar sentences in both, like

wiki: "The Portuguese man o' war is a conspicuous member of the neuston, the community of organisms that live at the ocean surface."

source: "The Portuguese man of war, Physalia physalis, is one of the most conspicuous, but poorly understood members of the pleuston, a community of organisms that occupy a habitat at the sea-air interface."

I tried to make a post in the talk page, but it was immediately removed, and after trying to post again it was immediately removed without any discussion. Then, after talking with the person who removed my talk topic on my own user talk page, they mentioned that the source has a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. I also saw that on CopyPatrol, the user had added the parts of the article that were plagiarized, then changed the wording to be different. The current page still shows a 98% similarity on Earwig's Copyvio Detector.

Is this fine? Am I right that the article needs to be changed more, or is the current state of the article fine? Also a link to a specific rule about plagiarism in this case would be helpful, because I found it hard to get a direct word on the situation. WP:Copy-paste and WP:PLAG say slightly different things, but at least WP:Copy-paste states that "In case of uncertainty, please ask at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems or Wikipedia:Help desk for input from other editors."

Until your firm has a Wikipedia article, it cannot be added to that list. The subject of a Wikipedia article must be notable by our definition, so it is unlikely that your firm can be the subject of a Wikipedia article. WP:FINDLINK

Are there any alternatives to Wikipedia:FINDLINK right now? Im not sure why but these days, it doesn't seem to work properly for me. Import image to Commons

I want to import this image to Wiki Commons but it says "Can't import file because at least one of its revisions is missing an image file." Could someone restore the missing file please --FMSky (talk) 09:45, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

@FMSky: It appears to be completely missing. It wasn't deleted in the normal way so there is nothing to restore. I have marked it as hidden but I'm not sure of the effect on import. Try again. If it fails then I can delete it instead which sounds odd for a non-existing file but it has worked for me before. That time it was a version by the same user. @Paris1964: Wikipedia is not affiliated with Infogalactic. They use the same software as us but an old version of it. They have copied many of our articles which is allowed by our license but we have no control over their pages. https://infogalactic.com/info/Nicolas_Iljine is a copy of a 2015 version [3] of the Wikipedia article Nicolas Iljine. Both the 2015 and current version display references here at Wikipedia. Many Infogalactic features are only available to registered users but as far as I can tell, if you got Infogalactic to import the current Wikipedia article then the references would display while four of Nicolas Iljine#External links would fail. https://infogalactic.com/info/Special:Log/import shows they still import Wikipedia articles. I don't know their processes but you may have to request an account at https://infogalactic.com/info/Special:RequestAccount before you can contact them. Default Output of Inflation Template

The Inflation Template returns an error if the date is out of range.

Can this be avoided, such that it returns the input value as if inflation was 0 (or another reasonable value)?

Picture for an article

I was thinking about adding an image of this text (which is 300 year old german) to the article Effects of pornography on young people in the section 1715 - 1940: Protection from God's wrath and protection of youth, with this text: "concerns about the effects of pornography on adolescents can be drawn back to the 17th century" but I'm not sure if this image is really a good picture for this section, should i add the picture?

I am aware of MOS:IRELEV, but I'm unsure, the picture can theoretically enhance the understanding like the first picture in Constitution of the United States, but most people in enWp cant understand German, which makes it decoration. Should I mark the important part (which is marked in the link) when I want to insert the picture so that the reader understands what I mean or not?

The Other Karma, this is a matter of editorial judgment, but my opinion is that this snippet of 300 year old text in German adds nothing of value to the reader. On the other hand, an image of the first page of the US Constitution, with its well-known, oversized "We the People" flourish, brings benefit to our readers. Contents of deleted redirect

Is there a way I can find out what a deleted redirect pointed towards? I once made a redirect of the name of a person involved in an event (the page I redirected it towards was not itself the event but it had a subsection discussing it), and I was shown that the redirect had previously existed before as a redirect to a now nonexistent page (hence why it was deleted), but it didn't say what the page was. I thought this was strange as the section about this event had existed on this page for 10+ years and hadn't been deleted or, as far as I'm aware, previously turned into another page. I tried to find a deletion discussion related at all to this topic and found none.

@PARAKANYAA: It redirected to a deleted article Aleksandr Kuzminykh. Sometimes you can find hints by looking at other edits and log actions at the time by the deleting administrator. They deleted the article four hours earlier but made so many deletions between that it would have been hard to find.[4] Anyway, the subject was an unrelated footballer born in 1989. what company has this isignia? It is C with a line equidistant from the top of the c and coming straight down to midpoint. Tobyhoward, I imagine that you'll already be aware of the relevant issues; but briefly: if you can present explicit evidence that an image is now in the public domain, upload it to Commons and be careful to apply the appropriate public domain template to it; if it's not in the public domain and you can claim "fair use", upload it (at low resolution) to Wikipedia noting the specific use of it that would be fair. (In theory there's a third possibility: copyright images published under a usable copyleft licence. But in practice such images are, I suspect, vanishingly rare.) -- Hoary (talk) 06:37, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@Hoary Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'm aware of image upload protocols. My issue was how to locate film articles that needed an identifying image adding, as I wanted to create a list of them to gradually chip away at. I stumbled across the Category:WikiProject Awards participants page and noticed that basically everything on the page mistakenly links to Wikipedia:Awards by WikiProject. As far as I can tell, mass retitling of the two topics occurred years ago to eliminate confusion caused by them sounding so similar, and I assume this page was unfortunately just forgotten in that process.

Display of photo of another person with similar name

in the article, Palakollu Assembly constituency, in the table for 1985 assembly elections, the name of the Communist Party Marxist candidate is Alluri Satyanarayanaraju . This is correct. But, the photo depicted and personal details given when clicked on the name are wrong. The photo and details belong to another leader with the same name. The latter worked as PWD minister in the Congress Governments of united Andhra Pradesh ( though a previous communist ) and also AICC general Secretary. Since I'm told Alluri Satyanarayana Raju died in 1963, it seems you're correct, I delinked the name in Palakollu Assembly constituency. Thanks for noticing. Why are the cites in Ekşi Sözlük not automatically archived?

Help:Archiving a source says ‘ New URLs added to Wikipedia articles (but not other pages) are usually automatically archived by a bot.’ Perhaps the article was written before that bot started running?

Obviously I cannot see the primary source cites from here in Turkey without messing around with a VPN. Is there something I can do to get the cites archived regularly please? Chidgk1 (talk) 11:43, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Chidgk1, perhaps the language of Help:Archiving a source should be clarified. As you can see from the archive dates of the sources at Ekşi Sözlük after DreamRimmer's IABot run, these sources have already been archived between 2012 and early last year. The presence of an archive snapshot at Internet Archive doesn't mean that it will necessarily be linked from any particular Wikipedia article, which requires editorial action. Just FYI. If you have edits you would like done, then you can request another editor does them for you by using the edit request wizard. Connect new pages to Wikidata

Young Hearts (The Curse) is a new page that isn't connected to Wikidata. At Wikipedia:Wikidata#New articles it says how to connect it, but I don't see that flow on my screen. I'm using Vector 2022. The option to view a page's Wikidata item, or to add it to Wikidata, appears on my "Tools" sidebar. While I have these on my right sidebar, I believe they are tucked away by default on the top of the page, by the "Add topic" and "History" buttons. Isabelle Belato ^🏳‍🌈 14:20, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

The Wikidata item is missing so you cannot easily make it via Wkkidata. Go to wikidata:Special:NewItem to create it. It doesn’t help that the mobile interface of both Wikipedia and Wikidata are so incompatible. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 14:38, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Problems related to moved articles regarding university football

So I posted about this in WP:FOOTY to try to figure out what happened with some of the following articles:

• College soccer
• College association football
• College soccer in the United States

Originally all of the content was located at College soccer, but then the material was suddenly split between College association football and College soccer in the United States. Nevermind the fact that the moves were undiscussed, the histories for the pages College soccer and College soccer in the United States are now all messed up and everything redirects to College soccer in the United States, including the content not related to the U.S. The edit history for College soccer has been inexplicably moved to College soccer in the United States, but the talk page for College soccer remains the same as it was before. Contractor Garage - A new category of commercial real estate

Potential Authors, In 2010 I created and coined a new concept of commercial real estate called a Contractor Garage. Since then I have developed 8 properties in the Kansas City metro, trademarked it, and starting to share the branding with others across the United States. The term is starting to be widely used throughout the United State (and other parts of the world) thanks largely to social media. The concept is very similar to what CrossFit has done to the gym industry. We're a brand that has become synonymous with a new category of commercial real estate. "Contractor Garage is a branded category of commercial real estate that bridges mini storage with flex industrial space." The problem is since I am the creator of the concept and own the brand and trademark, I can not create a new topic to address this new subject. I instead need to be interviewed so someone else independent who can do it. I feel like this concepts needs to be added to Wikipedia because as time goes on social media influences are blurring the concept incorrectly with existing flex industrial real estate. I would like to set the record straight on what exactly it is, coming from the main person who created and coined the concept over 14 years ago. Wikipedia articles summarize what independent reliable sources say about a topic, not what it or those associated with it, say about it, so an interview with you would be insufficient to sustain an article. Wikipedia is not a means for people to share what they created one day. I think you misunderstand; the independent sources need to write about this topic in their own publications first, not here. Independent sources are writing about it daily via social media (X, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok) for example. No scientist or doctor has written any papers about it and it's not often a topic of media concern, but people have been talking about it for 14 years so Wikipedia will definitely not be the first. Social media is not considered a reliable source(please read). It doesn't have to be written about in scholarly or academic publications, just independent reliable sources like the news or published books. Kcombs79, posts by random people on social media platforms like X, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and the like are not reliable sources for creating an article on Wikipedia. They lack editorial control, fact checking and a reputation for accuracy. No one can "spearhead" this effort unless the topic has received significant coverage in reliable published sources that are entirely independent of you and your business ventures. It started out as a business in 2010 but has since taken off like wildfire as a concept. A good example of CrossFit, which started out as a business but has become synonymous with a new type of workout. Wikipedia has CrossFit in their system. There is nothing about a Contractor Garage. Contractor Garages are less sexy than a popular retail business such as CrossFit, so it will garner less media attention as a result. Maybe one day it will become big but in the meantime at topic should be addressed on Wikipedia for the public's knowledge. Kcombs79 (talk) 21:30, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

That KSNT story is obviously based on a press release or public relations campaign carried out by Neal Spencer, one of the partners in the business. It is not an independent source and therefore of no value in establishing the notability of this business. As for It's all haphazard, which is why it's important for Wikipedia to address the topic/concept, that is not how Wikipedia works. It may be important to you, but it is not important to Wikipedia, unless you can establish that this business venture meets the stringent standards at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). @98Tigerius: It's done manually with cut and paste, and an edit summary saying where you copied from per Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Hyperlink. You only have three archives and can do it yourself but I suggest you first change archive parameters. The bot did as instructed by maxarchivesize = 4T which means 4 threads per archive. It's more normal to specify a size like maxarchivesize = 150K for 150 kilobytes. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:55, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
